Huntsville, Alabama
Kenny Anderson has spent more than 40 years studying what makes people change, and what keeps them stuck. Now, as Executive Director of Leadership Empowerment Enterprise, he’s built a new venture around that lifetime of observation: Pathways to Purpose, a coaching program aimed at helping people bring more intention and clarity to both their careers and personal lives.
A Career Rooted in Community
Anderson’s road to coaching wound through classrooms, city government, and community organizations long before it led to a coaching practice. He worked at Calhoun Community College for 16 years, eventually becoming Dean of the Humanities and Social Sciences Division. In January 2013, Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle tapped him to serve as the city’s Multicultural Affairs Officer, a role he held until his retirement in October 2024.
Along the way, Anderson built a parallel career as a mental health counselor and public speaker. He’s a nationally certified counselor who has addressed audiences at Fortune 500 companies, universities, conferences, and religious institutions over the past three decades. He’s also used his platform to expand access to higher education, establishing five scholarships across four schools: Calhoun Community College, Oakwood University, Alabama A&M University, and Drake State Community & Technical College.
For over 30 years, Anderson has hosted 2nd Chance, a Sunday-afternoon radio program on Oakwood University’s WJOU 90.1 FM, also streamed on YouTube and Facebook. He’s written as a community columnist for the Huntsville Times and belongs to a roster of professional and civic organizations, including the National Board of Certified Counselors, the American Psychological Association, 100 Black Men of Greater Huntsville, and the Huntsville Rotary Club. He also sits on the boards of the Partnership for a Drug-Free Community, Habitat for Humanity of the River Valley, and The Plantrician Project.
He and his wife, Sonya (Tibbs) Anderson, a Branch Chief with the Army Contracting Command, live in Huntsville.
The Idea Behind the Coaching
Anderson’s approach to coaching rests on a simple premise: real growth happens when self-awareness meets accountability. He describes his method as anything but generic, built instead from decades spent studying human behavior and leadership in real-world settings, and tailored to whatever a given client actually needs.
That philosophy also shapes how he talks about purpose itself. Too often, he says, people equate their purpose with a job title or a passing interest, when it usually runs deeper than either. Given how short life is, he argues, it’s worth the effort to figure out what that deeper purpose actually is, and to build a life around it.
His pitch to would-be clients is ultimately about agency: anyone can improve their situation once they decide to, and the right coach can help them get there faster and with more clarity than they’d find on their own.
