Coach Dorsey Sims III, affectionately known as “Lil Coach,” is a towering figure in both the Greater Memphis community and the broader realm of basketball. With a rich familial legacy and a passion for the game instilled from a young age, Coach Sims III has not only made significant contributions to the sport but has also been a guiding light for youth across the country.  

Born into a basketball dynasty as the son of the late legendary 4-time Hall of Famer, Coach Dorsey Sims Jr., Coach Sims III’s roots are deeply entrenched in the game. His upbringing, surrounded by basketball luminaries like Marcus Haynes and John McClendon, laid the foundation for his profound understanding of the sport.  

Coach Sims III’s journey in basketball began at Chattanooga Riverside and Memphis Melrose High School, where he honed his skills and developed a deep appreciation for the game. Following his high school graduation in the Class of ’77, he pursued further education at Claremore Jr. College and Oklahoma City University. It was during this time that he served as the Student Sports Information Director under the late Head Basketball Coach Ken Trickey, further refining his knowledge and expertise in the sport.  

Beyond his achievements on the court, Coach Sims III’s commitment to community involvement is truly commendable. Serving on the Executive Board of Special Olympics/Memphis Branch and working with organizations like Suskie Sports, Inc., he has demonstrated a steadfast dedication to uplifting others. His involvement with the China Basketball Association, facilitating a cultural exchange through a decade-long contract, highlights his global impact.  

In his hometown of Memphis, Coach Sims III has been instrumental in various initiatives, including the Awareness Basketball Clinic and the Martin Luther King Jr. Tournament. His role as Assistant Director of the latter has been pivotal in elevating its status within the community. His enduring commitment to youth development has earned him recognition, including the Shelby County and Memphis Achievers Award on multiple occasions.  

Notably, Coach Sims III’s influence extends beyond the basketball court into the spiritual realm. As an active member of Olivet Fellowship Baptist Church, he serves as a Ministerial Assistant and contributes to the Power Ministry Committee, embodying his dedication to faith and service.  

Throughout his illustrious career spanning over three decades, Coach Dorsey Sims III has been a mentor, a leader, and a source of inspiration for countless individuals. His impact on the basketball community and the Greater Memphis area is immeasurable, reflecting not only his prowess in the sport but also his unwavering commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others.  

As Coach Sims III’s legacy continues to unfold, his journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of mentorship, community engagement, and spiritual enrichment. He stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration, lighting the way for future generations both on and off the basketball court.
