Michella Filipowitz’s life is a remarkable journey of transformation, where love, family, and purpose have taken center stage. As a model, art dealer, and co-chair of the DR Family Foundation, she has learned that family doesn’t have to follow a traditional path to be meaningful, and her passion for giving back has only grown stronger with time.

At just 15 years old, Michella left her home to pursue her dreams of modeling in Paris. The excitement and glamor of the fashion world quickly became her reality, but there was more beneath the surface. “I was really young and didn’t have the emotional support I needed,” Michella recalls. Her experiences during these early years in Paris shaped her understanding of the importance of mental health and well-being, lessons that would later fuel her philanthropic endeavors.

Several years later, at the age of 23, Michella faced another life-altering experience. She became a single mother to her son, Benjamin, and soon after, he was diagnosed with autism. “It was incredibly difficult,” she reflects. “I had to come to terms with the fact that Benjamin would have a different experience in life, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t thrive.”

Determined to provide the premier possible life for Benjamin, Michella began researching schools and therapies that would help him grow. “I realized how isolating the world can be for children with disabilities,” she says. “Many schools simply weren’t equipped to support him, and it became clear to me that the system wasn’t designed with inclusivity in mind.”

Despite the challenges, Michella found a supportive school in Miami that changed everything. “The progress Benjamin made was astonishing,” she shares. “He went from being non-verbal to reading and speaking—it was incredible.” When Michella later moved to Sydney with her fiancé, she was shocked to discover how limited the support for children with disabilities was compared to what she had experienced in Miami. “It’s been an uphill battle,” she admits, “but I’ve always believed that where there’s love and determination, there’s a way.”

One of the pivotal moments in Michella’s life was meeting her fiancé. “From the moment we met, he understood my journey with Benjamin,” she explains. “We connected on such a deep level, and he embraced Benjamin like his own. That was when I knew he was the one.” Their relationship grew quickly, and they made the decision to build a future together in Sydney.

Together, Michella and her fiancé co-founded the DR Family Foundation, a charity that supports children with disabilities and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Their goal is to create a nurturing environment where children can flourish, regardless of their circumstances. “We’re working on building a home for kids who don’t have a safe space, whether they come from broken homes or struggle with disabilities,” she says. “But more than that, we want to build a community where they can feel loved, accepted, and valued.”

Michella’s work doesn’t stop there. She is also advocating for changes in the education system to promote inclusivity for children with disabilities. “Segregating kids into special schools only isolates them further,” she says. “I want to see a world where all children grow up together, learning from each other’s differences.”

Her journey has taught her that love and family are what you make of them. “Benjamin has been my greatest teacher,” she reflects. “He’s shown me that life doesn’t have to follow a set path. Family isn’t defined by the traditional standards, and I’m grateful for the love and support I’ve found along the way.”

Michella’s mission is to create a world where every child, no matter their background or abilities, is given the opportunity to thrive. Through her work with the DR Family Foundation, she is building that future, one step at a time. “My dream is to see a world where love and acceptance are at the heart of every community,” she says. “We all have the power to make that happen.”

Life’s unpredictability can be both exhilarating and terrifying. Like a river, it flows with calm stretches and turbulent rapids. During these challenging times, a strong support system of family, friends, and mental health professionals becomes our lifeline, guiding us towards emotional stability and resilience.

My story begins in the hallways of my high school, where an innocent interaction sparked a wildfire of rumors that would follow me for years. It started when a boy on the school bus, who had previously shown interest in dating me, asked an inappropriate question about self-pleasure. Uncomfortable and taken aback, I simply shook my head “no” and moved to a different seat. Little did I know that this small gesture would become the catalyst for years of torment.

The cruelty reached new heights when someone went as far as publicly shaming me at a basketball game. They displayed my picture and hurled derogatory names at me, turning what should have been an enjoyable event into a nightmare. These rumors continued to haunt me well into adulthood, causing ongoing distress and harassment. There were even frightening instances where strangers followed me, subjecting me to verbal and physical attacks.

Navigating this tumultuous journey was made even more challenging by my autism. The naivety, anxiety, and communication difficulties that often accompany autism made it hard for me to accurately interpret and respond to these complex social situations. There were times when I struggled to defend myself or explain my side of the story, which only seemed to fuel the rumors further.

Despite these overwhelming challenges, I refused to let the cruelty of others define me. I leaned heavily on my faith, drawing strength from my beliefs and the hope they provided. My determination to succeed and fulfill my purpose became my driving force. I made a conscious decision not to give in to the sadistic individuals who seemed intent on breaking my spirit.

“Awareness is the first step to change,” became my mantra. I realized that by sharing my story, I could potentially help others who might be going through similar experiences. It became clear to me that bullying knows no bounds, but neither does resilience. This realization empowered me to push forward, using my experiences as a catalyst for personal growth and a tool to help others.

Today, as a school psychologist specializing in autism and child find evaluations and counseling, I use my past experiences to fuel my passion for helping others. I employ a variety of therapeutic techniques, including mindfulness, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), play therapy, and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT). My goal is to provide a holistic approach to support the well-being of my students, ensuring that every child receives the support they need to thrive.

My journey has also inspired me to become an advocate for mental health awareness in the minority community. I understand firsthand the importance of breaking down stigmas and providing accessible support for those who need it most.

Outside of my professional life, I find joy in volunteering, extending my compassion beyond the school setting. I also nurture my creative side through crafting, finding solace and expression in the act of creating. My faith continues to be a cornerstone of my life, and I regularly attend church, drawing strength from my spiritual community.

Perhaps most importantly, I cherish the adventures I embark on with my family. These moments of exploration and discovery serve as a reminder of the beauty and joy that life can offer, even after experiencing such difficult times.

My story is one of resilience, hope, and the power of human connection. It stands as a testament to the fact that even in our darkest moments, with the right support and determination, we can not only survive but thrive. Rabbi Shaul B. Danyiel has lived a unique life. He started as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army, then became an Arabic translator, and later a full-time rabbi and author. His new book, Beneath the Depths of Redemption: Jonah’s Journey – Translation and Exegesis, shows how his knowledge of languages, strong faith, and love for teaching come together to offer a new view of the Book of Jonah.

Rabbi Danyiel’s journey is a powerful example of dedication and determination. Like many people, he faced challenges along the way. After high school, he joined the Army and served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. His military service took him worldwide, where he learned Arabic and later became a chaplain in the Army Reserve. These experiences greatly impacted him and eventually led him to focus on writing, especially about religion and translation. In a recent interview, Rabbi Daniel shared that he had always wanted to be a writer.
