Michella Filipowitz: Embracing Love, Redefining Family, and Making a Difference

By: Maria Williams

Michella Filipowitz’s life is a remarkable journey of transformation, where love, family, and purpose have taken center stage. As a model, art dealer, and co-chair of the DR Family Foundation, she has learned that family doesn’t have to follow a traditional path to be meaningful, and her passion for giving back has only grown stronger with time.

At just 15 years old, Michella left her home to pursue her dreams of modeling in Paris. The excitement and glamor of the fashion world quickly became her reality, but there was more beneath the surface. “I was really young and didn’t have the emotional support I needed,” Michella recalls. Her experiences during these early years in Paris shaped her understanding of the importance of mental health and well-being, lessons that would later fuel her philanthropic endeavors.

Several years later, at the age of 23, Michella faced another life-altering experience. She became a single mother to her son, Benjamin, and soon after, he was diagnosed with autism. “It was incredibly difficult,” she reflects. “I had to come to terms with the fact that Benjamin would have a different experience in life, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t thrive.”

Determined to provide the premier possible life for Benjamin, Michella began researching schools and therapies that would help him grow. “I realized how isolating the world can be for children with disabilities,” she says. “Many schools simply weren’t equipped to support him, and it became clear to me that the system wasn’t designed with inclusivity in mind.”

Despite the challenges, Michella found a supportive school in Miami that changed everything. “The progress Benjamin made was astonishing,” she shares. “He went from being non-verbal to reading and speaking—it was incredible.” When Michella later moved to Sydney with her fiancé, she was shocked to discover how limited the support for children with disabilities was compared to what she had experienced in Miami. “It’s been an uphill battle,” she admits, “but I’ve always believed that where there’s love and determination, there’s a way.”

One of the pivotal moments in Michella’s life was meeting her fiancé. “From the moment we met, he understood my journey with Benjamin,” she explains. “We connected on such a deep level, and he embraced Benjamin like his own. That was when I knew he was the one.” Their relationship grew quickly, and they made the decision to build a future together in Sydney.

Together, Michella and her fiancé co-founded the DR Family Foundation, a charity that supports children with disabilities and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Their goal is to create a nurturing environment where children can flourish, regardless of their circumstances. “We’re working on building a home for kids who don’t have a safe space, whether they come from broken homes or struggle with disabilities,” she says. “But more than that, we want to build a community where they can feel loved, accepted, and valued.”

Michella’s work doesn’t stop there. She is also advocating for changes in the education system to promote inclusivity for children with disabilities. “Segregating kids into special schools only isolates them further,” she says. “I want to see a world where all children grow up together, learning from each other’s differences.”

Her journey has taught her that love and family are what you make of them. “Benjamin has been my greatest teacher,” she reflects. “He’s shown me that life doesn’t have to follow a set path. Family isn’t defined by the traditional standards, and I’m grateful for the love and support I’ve found along the way.”

Michella’s mission is to create a world where every child, no matter their background or abilities, is given the opportunity to thrive. Through her work with the DR Family Foundation, she is building that future, one step at a time. “My dream is to see a world where love and acceptance are at the heart of every community,” she says. “We all have the power to make that happen.”

Whispers to Wisdom: Triumphing Over the Echo of Rumors

By: Overnight Publicity

Life’s unpredictability can be both exhilarating and terrifying. Like a river, it flows with calm stretches and turbulent rapids. During these challenging times, a strong support system of family, friends, and mental health professionals becomes our lifeline, guiding us towards emotional stability and resilience.

My story begins in the hallways of my high school, where an innocent interaction sparked a wildfire of rumors that would follow me for years. It started when a boy on the school bus, who had previously shown interest in dating me, asked an inappropriate question about self-pleasure. Uncomfortable and taken aback, I simply shook my head “no” and moved to a different seat. Little did I know that this small gesture would become the catalyst for years of torment.

The cruelty reached new heights when someone went as far as publicly shaming me at a basketball game. They displayed my picture and hurled derogatory names at me, turning what should have been an enjoyable event into a nightmare. These rumors continued to haunt me well into adulthood, causing ongoing distress and harassment. There were even frightening instances where strangers followed me, subjecting me to verbal and physical attacks.

Navigating this tumultuous journey was made even more challenging by my autism. The naivety, anxiety, and communication difficulties that often accompany autism made it hard for me to accurately interpret and respond to these complex social situations. There were times when I struggled to defend myself or explain my side of the story, which only seemed to fuel the rumors further.

Despite these overwhelming challenges, I refused to let the cruelty of others define me. I leaned heavily on my faith, drawing strength from my beliefs and the hope they provided. My determination to succeed and fulfill my purpose became my driving force. I made a conscious decision not to give in to the sadistic individuals who seemed intent on breaking my spirit.

“Awareness is the first step to change,” became my mantra. I realized that by sharing my story, I could potentially help others who might be going through similar experiences. It became clear to me that bullying knows no bounds, but neither does resilience. This realization empowered me to push forward, using my experiences as a catalyst for personal growth and a tool to help others.

Today, as a school psychologist specializing in autism and child find evaluations and counseling, I use my past experiences to fuel my passion for helping others. I employ a variety of therapeutic techniques, including mindfulness, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), play therapy, and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT). My goal is to provide a holistic approach to support the well-being of my students, ensuring that every child receives the support they need to thrive.

My journey has also inspired me to become an advocate for mental health awareness in the minority community. I understand firsthand the importance of breaking down stigmas and providing accessible support for those who need it most.

Outside of my professional life, I find joy in volunteering, extending my compassion beyond the school setting. I also nurture my creative side through crafting, finding solace and expression in the act of creating. My faith continues to be a cornerstone of my life, and I regularly attend church, drawing strength from my spiritual community.

Perhaps most importantly, I cherish the adventures I embark on with my family. These moments of exploration and discovery serve as a reminder of the beauty and joy that life can offer, even after experiencing such difficult times.

My story is one of resilience, hope, and the power of human connection. It stands as a testament to the fact that even in our darkest moments, with the right support and determination, we can not only survive but thrive. To anyone facing bullying or struggling with its aftermath, remember: your story isn’t over, and your resilience is a force to be reckoned with.

The Bellingham Pollinator Project is designed not only for artists but for people from all walks of life who are interested in adopting a more creative approach to daily challenges. Inspired by the work of writers like Anaïs Nin, Young’s philosophy is that creativity can shape one’s experience of the world. She frequently cites Nin’s quote, “Had I not created my whole world, I would certainly have died in other people’s,” as a guiding principle of the Bellingham Pollinator Project. Her hope is to help individuals develop a creative mindset that can guide them through various aspects of life, leading to greater personal satisfaction.

Young emphasizes that taking small, consistent steps can have a significant impact over time, although she acknowledges that outcomes vary for each individual.

Rabbi Shaul B. Danyiel’s Journey: From Soldier to Spiritual Leader and Author

By: Seraphina Quinn

Rabbi Shaul B. Danyiel has lived a unique life. He started as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army, then became an Arabic translator, and later a full-time rabbi and author. His new book, Beneath the Depths of Redemption: Jonah’s Journey – Translation and Exegesis, shows how his knowledge of languages, strong faith, and love for teaching come together to offer a new view of the Book of Jonah.

Rabbi Danyiel’s journey is a powerful example of dedication and determination. Like many people, he faced challenges along the way. After high school, he joined the Army and served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. His military service took him worldwide, where he learned Arabic and later became a chaplain in the Army Reserve. These experiences greatly impacted him and eventually led him to focus on writing, especially about religion and translation. His story shows how our life experiences can shape our passions and guide us to new paths.

In a recent interview, Rabbi Daniel shared that he had always wanted to be a writer. However, the responsibilities of supporting his family meant that he had to put his dream on hold while he worked as an accountant auditing defense contracts. It wasn’t until later in life that he decided to take a leap of faith and fully committed to writing and spiritual leadership.

Rabbi Danyiel’s book on the Book of Jonah isn’t just about translating words. It’s about exploring the original Hebrew text to find the deeper meanings that can get lost when texts are translated into different languages. When we read religious texts in our own language, we might not realize that some of the true meanings and subtle details don’t always come through.

Rabbi Danyiel, who speaks five languages, believes it’s essential to understand the text’s original language to grasp its whole meaning. By carefully studying the Hebrew words and phrases, he helps uncover these hidden meanings, giving us a clearer and richer understanding of the scriptures. This approach allows readers to connect more deeply with the messages in the text, making the lessons more meaningful and relevant in their lives. During his time in Kuwait, while on a military mission, he had an important realization. He discovered that many modern translations of the Book of Jonah fail to capture the full depth of the original Hebrew text. This inspired him to create his own translation, one that stayed true to the language and culture of the time.

Rabbi Danyiel’s book Beneath the Depths of Redemption: Jonah’s Journey – Translation and Exegesis offers a new way of looking at the story of Jonah. By carefully studying the original Hebrew text, Rabbi Danyiel uncovers important details and themes that are often missed in regular translations. His book doesn’t just retell the story; it explores the deeper emotions and lessons in Jonah’s journey, like the struggle to follow God’s commands, the nature of God’s mercy, and the challenge of facing our fears. This book is not just for experts but anyone who wants to understand the Bible better. Rabbi Danyiel’s analysis helps readers see Jonah’s story as more than just an old tale—it’s a lesson we can apply today. It encourages us to face our challenges with faith and to show kindness and forgiveness, even when it’s hard. The book helps readers connect with the deeper meanings and values in the story of Jonah.

Rabbi Danyiel’s family has played a crucial role in his journey. He dedicated his book to his wife and children, who have supported him through his career changes and writing projects. He shared how much their encouragement has meant to him, especially during the times when he was away on military deployments. Looking ahead, he has many more projects in the works. With over fifty-six ideas for books, he plans to continue exploring the connections between language, faith, and history. His next focus is a historical narrative on the Book of Jonah, written to combine accurate history with engaging storytelling.

Rabbi Shaul B. Danyiel’s life and work show the power of dedication, faith, and the importance of understanding the true meanings behind ancient texts. His translation of the Book of Jonah offers readers a fresh perspective on a well-known story, encouraging us all to think more deeply about the words we read and the beliefs we hold.

A Tale of Triumph and Loss: Pamela Hopkins’ “Walk of Honor”

By: John Glover (MBA)

Pamela Hopkins’ latest single, “Walk of Honor“, is a heart-wrenching ballad that delves into the dual tragedies and the poignant beauty found within the act of organ donation. Released on January 5th, 2024, the song represents one of Hopkins’ most personal and evocative works to date, bringing a profound narrative to life through its touching lyrics and tender musical arrangement.

The story that unfolds in “Walk of Honor” is inspired by a real-life honor walk—a solemn event where a donor’s body is escorted by family and hospital staff to the operating room for organ donation. This narrative is beautifully captured in Hopkins’ lyrics, which tell the story of a mother grappling with the loss of her daughter. The lyrics are haunting yet hopeful, illustrating the juxtaposition of a mother’s grief with the lifesaving gift her daughter is about to give to others. The line, “Somebody else’s baby’s heart is gonna beat again,” strikes a powerful chord, underscoring the bittersweet reality of organ donation.

Musically, “Walk of Honor” is anchored by a simple yet poignant melody. The acoustic guitar provides a soft, steady foundation that allows the weight of the lyrics to take center stage. The song is built around a traditional country music structure, but it’s the emotion in Hopkins’ voice that truly elevates the track. Her vocal delivery is raw and genuine, imbued with the pain and eventual acceptance that comes with such a devastating loss. The production is understated, allowing the lyrics and Hopkins’ emotive performance to resonate deeply with the listener.

The songwriting, a collaboration between Hopkins, Anna Brinker, and Lonnie Abbott, is another strong aspect of this single. The lyrics are carefully crafted to convey a narrative that is as universal as it is personal. The chorus, in particular, is a standout, with its refrain of “Somebody else’s mama’s gonna breathe ok again” driving home the lifesaving impact of the daughter’s sacrifice. The second verse adds a layer of complexity, introducing the perspective of the young man who caused the tragedy through drunk driving, yet was saved by the same girl he unintentionally harmed. This twist not only enhances the emotional depth of the song but also serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless behavior.

One of the most remarkable elements of “Walk of Honor” is how it handles such heavy themes with grace and sensitivity. The song is neither preachy nor overly sentimental, striking a perfect balance that respects the gravity of its subject matter while also offering a sense of hope and redemption. The bridge, where the mother contemplates forgiveness, is a particularly moving moment, reflecting the deep emotional journey that follows such an event.

“Walk of Honor” also stands as an important cultural statement. By addressing organ donation and drunk driving, Hopkins not only tells a compelling story but also raises awareness about these critical issues. The song serves as both a tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and as a reminder of the importance of making responsible choices.

Pamela Hopkins’ “Walk of Honor” is more than just a song—it’s a poignant narrative set to music, one that lingers in the mind long after the final note has faded. With its emotionally charged lyrics, powerful message, and heartfelt performance, this single is sure to resonate deeply with listeners and cement Hopkins’ place as a significant voice in contemporary country music.

This is not just a song for country music fans, but for anyone who has ever experienced loss, love, and the complex interplay between the two. “Walk of Honor” is a testament to the power of music to heal, inspire, and ultimately, to honor life in all its forms.

Architect Student’s Donor Drives Builds Female Empowerment

By: Meredith Cole

Zaria Smith is no ordinary architecture student. A bright light with an indomitable spirit, she’s not only making her mark in the world of architecture but also standing tall as an ambassador for LiveSafe Resources. This nonprofit organization, dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, has found in Zaria a powerful advocate who knows firsthand the pain and devastation of such experiences. As she prepares to enter her final year at Notre Dame, Zaria’s focus is not only on her studies but also on creating a better, safer world for others.

The conversation begins with Zaria reflecting on a life-changing summer that led her to deepen her involvement with LiveSafe Resources. Her voice, though soft, carries the weight of someone who has faced adversity and emerged stronger. Over the phone, Zaria opens up about her journey, her recent clothing drive for survivors, and her plans to impact both advocacy and architecture.

Meredith: Zaria, it’s clear that you’re passionate about the work you do with LiveSafe Resources. Can you tell me more about what drew you to this cause?

Zaria: I’ve always believed in standing up for those who can’t stand up for themselves. My experience as a survivor of sexual assault has given me a deep understanding of the pain and fear that comes with such trauma. After what happened to me at the Summer Smash Music Festival, I realized that I needed to channel my pain into something positive. LiveSafe Resources provides a platform for survivors to regain their voice, their dignity, and their hope for the future. That’s something I want to be a part of—helping others find their strength after going through something so terrible.

Meredith: Your work with LiveSafe Resources is incredibly inspiring. Recently, you organized a clothing drive for survivors. What motivated you to start this initiative?

Zaria: After my assault, I remember feeling so vulnerable and alone. The smallest acts of kindness meant the world to me. When I became an ambassador for LiveSafe Resources, I wanted to do something tangible that could help other survivors. Clothing is such a basic need, but it also represents dignity and self-respect. I organized the clothing drive because I wanted to provide survivors at the center with garments that could help them feel confident and cared for as they rebuild their lives. Seeing the donations pour in was overwhelming in the best way possible—it reminded me that there’s so much good in the world.

Meredith: Architecture is a big part of your life. How do you see your future in this field intersecting with your advocacy work?

Zaria: I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately. Architecture is about creating spaces that are not only functional but also meaningful. I want to use my skills to design spaces that can bring comfort and safety to survivors. Whether that’s creating shelters, counseling centers, or even just public spaces where people can feel secure, I believe architecture can be a powerful tool for healing. My goal is to combine my passion for design with my commitment to advocacy so I can contribute to building a world where everyone feels safe.

Meredith: That’s such a powerful vision. As someone who has faced personal trauma, how do you maintain your mental and emotional well-being while advocating for others?

Zaria: It’s definitely a challenge, but I’ve learned the importance of self-care and setting boundaries. I’ve surrounded myself with a supportive network of friends, family, and mentors who understand what I’m going through and encourage me to take care of myself. I also find peace in my creative outlets, whether it’s drawing, writing, or even just taking a walk in nature. Helping others is healing for me, but I’ve also learned that it’s okay to step back when I need to recharge.

Meredith: You’ve accomplished so much already, but I know you’re just getting started. What’s next for you, both in your studies and your advocacy work?

Zaria: I’m excited to finish my degree at Notre Dame, but I’m even more excited about the possibilities after graduation. I want to continue working with LiveSafe Resources and other organizations that support survivors. I’m also considering starting a nonprofit of my own, focused on creating safe and supportive environments through architecture and design. I feel like I’m on the brink of something big, and I’m ready to keep pushing forward.

Meredith: Finally, what message would you like to share with others who have experienced similar challenges?

Zaria: You are not alone. It might feel like your world has shattered, but there’s hope and healing on the other side. Surround yourself with people who support you, and don’t be afraid to seek help. Your voice matters, and your story isn’t over. It’s just beginning.

Zaria Smith’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the impact one person can have when they choose to turn their pain into purpose. As she continues to break barriers in architecture and advocacy, there’s no doubt that Zaria’s story will inspire others to find their strength and make their mark on the world.
