Sixteen years ago, Samantha Brior found herself navigating the often isolating and overwhelming journey of eating disorder recovery. Today, she’s the founder of Safe Sam’s, a brand that’s changing the narrative and providing essential support for individuals battling eating disorders. But Safe Sam’s isn’t just another company—it’s a mission born from Samantha’s personal experience and professional expertise in the field of eating disorder recovery. Her journey is one of resilience and compassion, which has become the foundation of Safe Sam’s. 

Samantha’s story began with her own battle. Going through her own recovery taught her not only how challenging the process can be but also the profound importance of support. The inspiration for Safe Sam’s came when Samantha saw her best friend struggling with an eating disorder and wanted to help. What started as a heartfelt mission to support a close friend has since evolved into a product line that provides real assistance to many others in recovery. 

Samantha’s personal experience fuels her desire to give back, and her professional background in the field of eating disorder treatment has made her an expert in recognizing the gaps in recovery resources. Many organizations focus on helping people access treatment, but Samantha knows that recovery doesn’t end when someone leaves a treatment center. That’s when the real-world challenges begin. She’s seen the struggle to pay for groceries or medical bills that come as a result of the disorder—issues often too personal or embarrassing to discuss. Samantha understood this not only because she’s been there herself but also because, for the past six years, she’s worked professionally in the eating disorder and mental health field.

Safe Sam’s began with the idea of creating snack bars that felt “safe” for people in recovery. In the eating disorder community, “safe” foods refer to those that don’t trigger overwhelming anxiety or fear. Samantha understood how even small choices, like what to eat, could carry enormous weight for someone trying to heal. However, due to manufacturing challenges, the brand had to pivot from its original idea, turning instead to recipe books and products that still carried the same message of support and safety. 

Though the mission never changed, Samantha faced significant obstacles along the way. From manufacturing issues to losing 70% of her inventory in transit, Safe Sam’s was not an easy business to build. But Samantha’s drive to help others in recovery kept her going. When showing up to industry events, she initially found it difficult to gain respect as someone with only lived experience and no formal degree. To overcome this, she worked her way into two of the top eating disorder treatment centers in the country, gaining both the experience and professional insight needed to further her mission. She started at the bottom, in an entry-level role, and eventually worked her way up to collaborating on cutting-edge AI software designed to track patient progress after treatment.

Safe Sam’s sets their brand apart from other brands in the industry with its focus on the real-life situations people face outside of treatment. The brand doesn’t just offer tools or products—it provides financial assistance to those dealing with the everyday costs that come with recovery, such as groceries and medical bills. Samantha’s weekly support groups allow her to stay connected with the community, offering her a firsthand look at the needs of people in recovery and the opportunity to shape her brand to better meet those needs. She listens, understands, and creates solutions for issues that many people are too ashamed to talk about.

Samantha’s accomplishments reflect not only her determination but also her passion for the cause. From her humble beginnings to speaking on This is My Brave, a platform for mental health advocates, and making her debut on season 17 of The Blox reality show for entrepreneurs, Samantha’s career has been filled with moments that highlight her resilience. She didn’t just create a business; she built a movement, one that is expanding to include more products and deeper partnerships within the mental health and eating disorder community.

Samantha envisions Safe Sam’s continuing to grow in ways that can help even more people. Her dream is to expand the product line and deepen collaborations with organizations and brands that share her mission. But most importantly, she wants to keep inspiring others in recovery, showing them that with the right mindset and support, they, too, can reclaim their lives.

At its core, Safe Sam’s is about creating safe spaces—whether that’s through products or the supportive communities Samantha has fostered. The name Safe Sam’s originally came from the idea of creating a snack bar that felt “safe,” but Samantha decided to keep it as the brand evolved into books and other products. To her, the word “safe” isn’t just about food—it’s about creating an environment where people can be themselves, without fear or judgment, as they navigate the ups and downs of recovery.

Samantha says, “I want people to associate Safe Sam’s with a feeling of safety and support. I’ve always tried to create a safe space for people to be themselves in their recovery, and that’s what I want the brand to represent.”
