While protocols and instruments are essential, surgeons’ emotional and ethical challenges are equally profound. Dr. Anderson’s Surgical Tales dives into these aspects, uncovering the sacrifices, resilience, and unwavering commitment that define the profession.

Rather than focusing solely on procedures, the book delves into the emotional intensity of surgical practice. It explores questions like: How do surgeons navigate insurmountable challenges? How do they remain composed under relentless pressure? Through vivid storytelling, readers experience the highs and lows of surgical work, from advanced urban hospitals to makeshift clinics in underserved areas.

The stories also emphasize the human connections at the heart of surgery, showing how outcomes impact not just patients and their families but also the surgeons themselves. These emotionally charged narratives offer a compelling mix of drama, authenticity, and insight into the endurance of the human spirit.

A Worldwide Perspective on Surgery

Although surgery is a universal practice, the environments in which it takes place can vary dramatically. Dr. Anderson highlights these contrasts by sharing surgeons’ experiences working in vastly different healthcare systems. From intricate operations in technologically advanced facilities to life-saving improvisations in resource-limited clinics, these stories showcase extraordinary adaptability, skill, and dedication.

The book sheds light on global healthcare disparities by contrasting high-resource and low-resource settings. While advanced hospitals may offer cutting-edge technology, surgeons in underserved areas often rely on ingenuity and perseverance to achieve similar outcomes. Moments of Triumph and Reflection

Every surgical case tells two interwoven stories: the patient’s and the surgeon’s. The stakes are immense, with every decision potentially changing lives. Surgical Tales captures the triumphs and challenges of the profession, offering readers a nuanced perspective on its emotional landscape.

From miraculous recoveries to heartbreaking losses, the stories reflect the dual nature of surgery. Surgeons must blend precision with compassion, navigating the technical and emotional complexities of their work.

Dr. Anderson shares the personal journeys of surgeons as they grapple with failure, redemption, and perseverance. These narratives serve as a reminder that behind the surgical mask is a human being deeply committed to healing and hope.

The Resilient Journey of Dr. Meleeka Clary

Early Life and Challenges

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Dr. Meleeka Clary’s life is a testament to resilience and determination. As the sixth of eight children in a blended family, she grew up in the Mattapan neighborhood. Her father, Andrew Lee Clary Sr., was an ambitious entrepreneur whose struggles with substance abuse often cast a shadow over the household. Her mother, Larriana Clary, was a devout and loving woman, but she faced her own battle with depression. Despite these challenges, Meleeka’s parents instilled in her a strong sense of independence and a belief in hard work.

“My parents taught me that no matter how tough life gets, you can always find a way to rise above it,” Meleeka reflects. “They believed in my potential even when circumstances seemed impossible.”

Growing up in Mattapan came with its own challenges. The neighborhood, while vibrant and full of culture, also exposed Meleeka to societal struggles like crime and poverty. Yet, these experiences further shaped her resilience and drive to overcome adversity. She often speaks of how these early lessons fueled her desire to succeed and inspire others.

Discovering Creativity and Passion

From a young age, Meleeka’s talents in the arts became evident. At just eight years old, she began attending dance classes, excelling in tap, ballet, and jazz. By 13, she had demonstrated her acting abilities when she was cast as Harriet Tubman in a school play, further fueling her passion for performance.

However, her childhood was far from idyllic. As her parents’ health deteriorated, Meleeka’s older brother stepped in to provide guidance, but the weight of responsibility often fell on her shoulders. These early artistic pursuits were more than just hobbies; they were an escape and a way to channel her emotions.

“I found solace in creativity,” she recalls. “Dance and acting gave me an outlet to express myself when words weren’t enough.”

Her love for the arts continued to grow, and she began envisioning a future where her talents could help her break free from the challenges of her environment. Her passion wasn’t just about self-expression but also about inspiring others to find their voices.

Navigating Adversity

At 17, Meleeka moved out independently, leaving high school to work and support herself. This decision was not easy, but it was necessary. Tragedy struck when her father passed away, leaving her with the dual responsibility of caring for her mother and ensuring her own survival. Despite these hardships, Meleeka’s determination never wavered.

“I knew I had to push forward for my family and for myself,” she shares. “Failure was never an option.”

Meleeka’s journey back to education was equally inspiring. She re-enrolled in school, earned her high school diploma, and pursued higher education with a focus on criminal justice, earning degrees from Newbury College and Curry College. Balancing school, work, and caregiving was no small feat, but Meleeka credits her perseverance and faith for seeing her through.

“Education became my weapon,” she says. “It was my way of reclaiming control over my life and building a better future.”

Achievements and Legacy

Balancing multiple roles as a student, mother, and caregiver, Meleeka overcame health challenges and personal setbacks, including a difficult marriage. Today, she is pursuing a PhD in Clinical Psychology at Walden University while reigniting her acting and modeling career. She has also dedicated herself to inspiring others to overcome their struggles and embrace their potential.

“My story isn’t unique,” she humbly states. “It’s proof that anyone can overcome their circumstances with the right mindset.”

In addition to her academic pursuits, Dr. Clary has been actively involved in community work. She mentors young women, sharing her story and encouraging them to chase their dreams despite obstacles. Her work in both the academic and creative fields exemplifies her belief in holistic success—balancing personal growth, professional achievements, and community impact.

Dr. Clary’s story serves as a powerful reminder that resilience, determination, and optimism can lead to extraordinary accomplishments. Her life continues to inspire those facing their own battles, proving that with hard work and a clear vision, no challenge is insurmountable.

Final Thoughts

Dr. Meleeka Clary’s journey is not just a narrative of overcoming adversity; it is a call to action for anyone who feels trapped by their circumstances. Her life demonstrates the transformative power of education, creativity, and unwavering determination. As she continues to pursue her dreams, she remains a beacon of hope and a testament to the idea that it’s never too late to rewrite your story.

“Success isn’t about where you start,” she concludes. “It’s about where you’re willing to go and how hard you’re willing to work to get there.”

With a story that resonates deeply with many, Dr. Clary proves that even the most challenging beginnings can lead to extraordinary outcomes.

Eric Bauer: Championing Evidence-Based Practices in EMS

In an ever-evolving field like Emergency Medical Services (EMS), staying up-to-date with the latest medical research is essential for delivering high-quality patient care. As new studies and clinical trials are published, they offer opportunities for EMS professionals to refine their protocols and practices. However, bridging the gap between academic research and real-world EMS applications can take time and effort. Eric Bauer, the co-founder of FlightBridgeED, has been one of the leaders in integrating evidence-based practices (EBP) within EMS, ensuring that paramedics, flight medics, and critical care providers have the up-to-date knowledge to deliver optimal care.

Evidence-based practice refers to the conscientious application of current premier evidence from clinical research when making decisions about patient care. While EMS providers have long relied on established guidelines and protocols, there has been a growing recognition that these must be continuously updated to reflect advancements in medical science. In EMS, evidence-based practices are especially critical because the environment is dynamic, time-sensitive, and high-risk.

By incorporating evidence-based interventions, EMS professionals may improve patient outcomes, reduce medical errors, and deliver more effective treatments. Eric Bauer has recognized this need and has devoted his career to translating medical research into actionable protocols and educational resources for EMS professionals, particularly in high-acuity, critical care transport settings.

As a flight paramedic and educator with over 20 years of experience in Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS), Bauer understands the complexities of providing prehospital care. In founding FlightBridgeED, he sought to create a platform that merges education with the latest clinical research, offering EMS providers the tools to implement evidence-based practices in their day-to-day operations.

In addition to his courses, Bauer’s study guides and review materials for certifications like the Flight Paramedic Certification (FP-C) and Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN) exams are heavily influenced by evidence-based guidelines. These materials help bridge the gap between theory and practice, equipping EMS professionals with the knowledge to apply evidence-backed techniques in the field.

While the importance of evidence-based practice is well recognized, significant barriers exist to its implementation in EMS. These include limited access to research, insufficient training on how to apply research findings, and resistance to change within the EMS culture. Eric Bauer has been instrumental in addressing these challenges by making medical research more accessible and digestible for EMS providers.

One of the barriers EMS professionals face is the sheer volume of published research and the difficulty of translating dense, academic language into practical applications. Bauer has taken on the role of an interpreter – reviewing the latest studies, guidelines, and clinical trials and then distilling the findings into understandable and actionable insights for the EMS community. His work through FlightBridgeED involves breaking down complex concepts such as neuroprotective strategies in head trauma or the impact of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) on oxygenation in patients with respiratory failure, making them accessible to both seasoned professionals and those new to critical care transport.

Bauer’s ability to communicate complex research practically and engagingly has helped to shift EMS providers’ mindset toward continuous learning and adaptation, ensuring they are prepared to implement new protocols based on the latest evidence.

Another barrier to evidence-based practice in EMS is the traditional, protocol-driven mindset that can sometimes limit adaptation to new research. EMS professionals are often taught to follow established protocols to the letter, which can create resistance to adopting new, evidence-based methods.

Bauer has worked tirelessly to build a culture of continuous professional development in EMS,

advocating for the importance of staying current with the latest medical advancements. Through his podcast, The FlightBridgeED Podcast, which has thousands of monthly listeners worldwide, Bauer discusses recent critical care and emergency medicine developments, offering EMS professionals an accessible platform to stay informed about new evidence and premier practices. Topics range from advanced pharmacology to the use of ketamine for sedation, all backed by research and expert insights.

By promoting an ethos of continuous education, Bauer encourages EMS providers to view themselves as lifelong learners. This shift in perspective is essential for successfully integrating evidence-based practices into daily EMS operations.

Furthermore, Bauer sees potential in emerging technologies such as telemedicine and artificial

intelligence (AI), which could provide EMS professionals with instant access to expert advice and research findings while in the field. By embracing these innovations, EMS may become a more adaptable, research-driven field, improving patient outcomes.

Eric Bauer’s commitment to evidence-based practice has significantly impacted the EMS community, particularly in critical care and HEMS. His work through FlightBridgeED has made cutting-edge medical research accessible to EMS professionals and has encouraged a culture of continuous learning and adaptation. As the field of EMS advances, Bauer’s contributions will remain vital in ensuring that providers have the tools and knowledge to deliver evidence-based, high-quality patient care.

Empowering Women, Empowering the World: Dr. Jo Dee Baer on “Essence of a Woman” Anthology

By: Jacob Stevens

In a world where women are often expected to wear multiple hats and balance countless responsibilities, stories of empowerment can serve as a profound reminder of resilience and strength. Dr. Jo Dee Baer, a seasoned holistic practitioner and health advocate, has collaborated with a diverse group of influential women, including public figures like Tiffany Haddish, Dr. Khalilah Camacho Ali, and HRH Princess Dr. Moradeun Ogunlana, to create a powerful anthology titled Essence of a Woman. Each contributor in this collection has transcended personal and societal expectations to embody their authentic selves and, in turn, empower others. Dr. Baer shares her insights on the collective journey of these remarkable women, her health philosophies, and the global mission this book aims to accomplish.

Reflecting on the anthology, Dr. Baer shares that it was not a single story but the shared journey of all the women contributors that resonated most deeply with her. Each woman in “Essence of a Woman” had to “cross her own Rubicon”—to push beyond the boundaries of self-doubt, abandon her comfort zone, and discover her voice. As Dr. Baer explains, these women did not simply recount their experiences; they transformed their stories into expressions of personal philosophy and vulnerability. This willingness to embrace authenticity and courage, to leave behind the familiar for the unknown, became the “golden thread” that wove their stories together.

Dr. Baer highlights that this process of self-discovery is empowering and deeply inspiring for anyone who encounters these narratives. For her, these collective stories are reminders that true empowerment comes when women support and uplift one another, sharing their fears, triumphs, and unique insights.

In her contribution to the anthology, Dr. Baer draws on her 47 years of experience in the medical and holistic health fields. Her chapter, “The Woman in a White Robe,” explores how the constant demands of family, community, and career can leave even the most empowered women exhausted and disillusioned. Dr. Baer confesses that she, too, succumbed to the pressures of “over-serving” others, leading to physical and emotional burnout. However, she found her way back to her core self by embracing daily meditation and intentional self-care, which reawakened her sense of purpose and helped her regain clarity.

This theme of finding balance through self-care is central to Dr. Baer’s health philosophy and is woven into the practical advice offered throughout the anthology. She encourages readers to “immerse yourself in the flow of who you are and how you are becoming.” This message aligns with the holistic approach she advocates in her practice—focusing on mind, body, and spirit as interconnected forces that require nourishment, balance, and compassion.

The collaboration with respected figures like Tiffany Haddish, Dr. Khalilah Camacho Ali, and HRH Princess Dr. Moradeun Ogunlana magnified the anthology’s impact. According to Dr. Baer, these contributors brought their stories and commitment to change, elevating the book’s message. Haddish’s call to “Woman Up,” Dr. Ali’s reminder to “Make the days count,” and Princess Moradeun’s words on the timeless grace of women all serve as empowering messages that resonate deeply with the book’s mission.

For Dr. Baer, each of these women embodies a unique aspect of female strength and resilience, and their insights contribute to the anthology’s goal of inspiring readers to connect with their inner power. The collaboration transformed the project from a collection of individual stories into a global vision of female empowerment that celebrates diversity in experience, culture, and perspective.

Alongside its inspirational content, Essence of a Woman supports a mission dedicated to combating child hunger. Dr. Baer envisions a chain of generosity, where each book purchase inspires readers to gift another copy to a friend who encourages others to continue the cycle. If this act of giving is repeated just seven times, the cumulative effect could make a meaningful difference, potentially reaching millions of children in need.  As Dr. Baer emphasizes, in the United States alone, one in five children faces hunger daily, and a small contribution from readers could be part of a larger solution.

The message “Buy a Book, Feed a Child” emphasizes the anthology’s dedication to social impact and community involvement. By encouraging women to participate in this cause, the authors are building a supportive network around their stories and leveraging their platform to champion an issue that connects with mothers, caregivers, and anyone passionate about fostering the well-being of future generations.

Ultimately, Dr. Baer believes that the anthology will inspire a shared vision of empowerment among women worldwide. Drawing on concepts from Traditional Chinese Medicine, which emphasizes balance, interconnectedness, and the flow of life force, she sees this anthology as an interwoven tapestry of cultures, professions, and beliefs. The stories within the book honor the “Yin and Yang” of existence, celebrating the unity of the natural and spiritual realms and the universal experiences of birth, life, health, and loss.

For Dr. Baer and her fellow contributors, Essence of a Woman is more than just a book; it is a call to action, inviting readers to reconnect with their feminine essence, support each other, and join together to empower the universe. Each story is a testament to women’s strength and grace, a reminder that they are not just individual voices but part of a larger, harmonious whole.

‘Stomp the City’ Iconic Awards Show Announced to Bring Awareness to Gun Violence Prevention

By: Lennard James

The “Stomp the City” ICONIC Awards Show, a powerful platform dedicated to honoring community leaders and raising awareness about the devastating effects of gun violence, is set to take center stage. A press conference held at Court Square Park featured prominent local leaders, including Founder Michael Dockery, Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris, Commissioner Mickell Lowery, Apostle Mardia Scott and Representative Joe Towns Jr., all unified by the mission to bring attention to the pressing issue of gun violence in the community.

The “Stomp the City” ICONIC Awards Show was born out of a personal tragedy for its founder, Michael Dockery. The devastating loss of his niece, Marisha, to gun violence ignited a passion to take a stand and turn pain into purpose. What began as a tragic event has evolved into a movement for social change, with Dockery’s vision focused on fostering a safer community and reducing the impact of gun violence.

During the press conference, Dockery highlighted the purpose behind the awards show. “This is more than just an event, it’s an opportunity for community reflection,” he said. “The event aims to honor those working to make neighborhoods safer and to highlight the importance of addressing the ongoing challenges of community violence.”

The press conference brought together key figures in the local government who have been vocal in the fight against gun violence and in the promotion of community safety. Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris, a dedicated advocate for criminal justice reform, shared his support for the event, emphasizing the importance of coming together as a community to create lasting change.

“Gun violence is not an issue we can afford to ignore. It’s impacting families, communities, and our future. Events like the ‘Stomp the City’ ICONIC Awards play a significant role in bringing attention to community safety and recognizing those who contribute to it,” Mayor Harris said during his remarks.

Commissioner Mickell Lowery, representing Shelby County’s District 8, also spoke passionately about the event and its significance. Lowery, a longtime advocate for community development and youth programs, stressed the need for continued awareness and intervention at all levels of government. “We owe it to the next generation to create safer neighborhoods,” Lowery said. “It’s on all of us to do our part to reduce gun violence and support efforts that inspire positive change.”

State Representative Joe Towns Jr., a veteran voice in the Tennessee House of Representatives, also expressed his commitment to the cause, urging the community to stay vigilant and engaged in the fight for safer streets. “The ‘Stomp the City’ Awards are a reminder that change is possible,” said Towns. “There is a continued need for policies and initiatives focused on protecting communities and supporting positive change.”

Leveraging Your LinkedIn Company Page with Adam Houlahan

In a crowded field of LinkedIn “experts” eager to sell you their coaching programs with promises of delivering a flood of qualified leads, Adam Houlahan, Founder and CEO of Prominence Global, distinguishes himself as one of the select few with the credentials to back up such claims. Not least, he was included in the elite LinkedIn Top Voice program in 2024.

With thousands of direct connections and an even larger following that has been absorbing and applying his LinkedIn strategies for over a decade, Houlahan’s expertise is well-established.

We sat down with him to get the inside scoop on leveraging the recent changes to LinkedIn company pages. Here’s the transcript of our conversation…

Joshua Finley:

“Great to talk with you today, Adam. Let’s get straight to it. LinkedIn company pages have been around for ages so what’s the big deal? Why do business leaders need to focus on this right now?”

Adam Houlahan:

“That’s true. Company pages have been available on LinkedIn for over a decade, but until now they’ve been pretty bland and generally haven’t got as much audience traction as personal profiles. However, nothing stands still and that’s certainly true of LinkedIn.They often change or add features and functionality that most members ignore or don’t know how to use. Recent changes to company pages have suddenly upped the ante.”

Joshua Finley:

“Sounds interesting. What’s changed and what do business leaders need to do about it?”

Adam Houlahan:

“Here’s the thing. LinkedIn is steadily widening the gap between free accounts and premium accounts, in terms of features and functionality. They’ve done that with many other aspects of the platform and now it applies to company pages as well. As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for.

The latest big change is that they’ve launched Premium Company pages with a suite of enhanced features that aren’t available on the standard company pages, even if the page admin has a premium personal account.

Joshua Finley:

“OK so give us a run-down of those enhanced features.”

Adam Houlahan:

“There are several. There are some that I think will be well worth implementing. Others I’m not so sure will be useful so I’ll be watching to see what happens with them.”

Joshua Finley:

“That makes sense. So which are the main features business leaders should pay attention to and consider implementing right now.”

Adam Houlahan:

“I think one of the most important new features is the Custom CTA – call to action – button. It appears right near the top of the page, highlighted in blue so it’s easy to see. And unlike posting external links in your content, which tends to get suppressed, you can use that button to point to any resource you like.

On our Prominence Global Premium Company Page, there’s a link to register for one of our forthcoming webinars.”

Joshua Finley:

“OK, that sounds like a pretty good feature for businesses to use. What else?”

Adam Houlahan:

“There’s more than we have time to cover today so I’ll just mention a few of the most important elements that I think make sense for businesses to look at.

You can showcase a customer testimonial right at the top of your page, displayed with light-colored shading different from the standard LinkedIn blue so it really stands out.

Then, just below your company overview – the About section – you can feature several highlights to promote aspects of your business. Like the custom Call To Action button, you can link to just about anything, both on and off the platform. Our Prominence Global page highlights testimonials and reviews, as well as our programs and some other publications.”

And last but by no means least there’s the auto-invite feature.”

Joshua Finley:

“I think I can guess what that might be, but I don’t want to jump to conclusions. What’s that and how does it work?”

Adam Houlahan:

“It’s specifically geared to enhance engagement with people who visit your company page. You get a limited number of invites, currently around 250, and they reset each month. Maybe it’s best if I just quote the way the people at LinkedIn themselves explain it:

‘You can grow your followers by automatically inviting members who engage with your content to follow your Page. After you enable auto-invites, members who publicly reacted, commented on, or shared your Page’s posts in the past 30 days will be invited to follow your Page. Auto-invites are also sent to members who engage with posts from admins of your Page, specifically when your Page is mentioned in the post. Invites will continue to be sent as members engage with your Page’s posts. You can see how many new followers came from auto-invites in your follower analytics.’

If you use this well it should go a long way to improving audience engagement, but it also raises a key issue for company page admins. You get out what you put in, so there has to be high-value content on your company page to generate audience engagement in the first place.”

Joshua Finley:

“That certainly makes sense and this sounds like a feature that will save business leaders and company page admins a lot of time. So, how do you get access to a LinkedIn Premium Company Page and what does it cost?”

Adam Houlahan:

“First I should mention that LinkedIn never rolls out a new feature to all members at the same time, so you may not have access to it yet, but it won’t be long. You can easily check – just go to your existing company page and look towards the bottom left-hand side of your screen. You should see a button that says ‘Try Premium Page’.

When you click that you’ll land on a sign-in page with a description of the main features, a link to the usual free trial period and the subscription cost. For Australia, it’s $109.99/month billed annually, so just check what currency it’s quoted in for your region.”

Joshua Finley:

“We’re just about out of time, so Adam, once again, thanks for sharing your insights with us today. One final question – if our readers want to find out more about your LinkedIn services for businesses what should they do?”

Adam Houlahan:

“Thanks, Joshua. My pleasure. At Prominence Global we run a range of different programs and we also publish a lot of free content on how to leverage LinkedIn. If your readers want to find out more they can reach out to me on LinkedIn or – dare I say it – visit our premium company page.”

Joshua Finley:

“Well, there you have it. All the inside running on LinkedIn’s new premium company pages from Adam Houlahan, one of the world’s leading LinkedIn experts.”
