Celebrating Storytelling Across the Seasons: Four Seasons Book Awards Hosts Times Square Honors
By: Melinda Wolfe
Times Square became a stage for literary recognition on January 9 as the Four Seasons Book Awards marked its annual Grand Prize celebration in the heart of New York City. Surrounded by the energy and movement of one of the world’s most recognizable locations, the event offered a moment of reflection and recognition for authors whose work had stood out across a year-long awards cycle.
The Four Seasons Book Awards is an international, unaffiliated program that recognizes independently and traditionally published books from around the world. Designed to be inclusive and accessible, the awards welcome authors and publishers producing books for the North American market, regardless of whether those works are newly released or previously published. The program’s structure is built around the idea that meaningful stories deserve ongoing visibility rather than just a single opportunity for recognition.
That philosophy is reflected in the awards’ seasonal format. Each year, the Four Seasons Book Awards hosts four distinct competitions—Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter—allowing authors to enter at different points throughout the year. At the conclusion of each season, finalists are named, and all seasonal finalists are automatically considered for the year-end Grand Prize.
The January 9 event in Times Square served as that celebration, offering finalists and winners an opportunity to gather and acknowledge the culmination of their efforts. Hosted by Michael Beas and Dar Dowling, the gathering highlighted the collective achievements of the authors while reinforcing the broader mission of the awards: to support visibility, continuity, and long-term recognition within the publishing landscape.
Speaking during the event, Michael Beas reflected on the intention behind the awards and the importance of sustaining opportunities for writers throughout the year.
“The Four Seasons Book Awards were built to honor the full lifecycle of a book, not just a single moment,” Beas said. “By celebrating authors across all four seasons and bringing that recognition into a public space like Times Square, we’re reminding writers that their work matters, their voices matter, and there is room for their stories to be seen and celebrated throughout the year.”
This year’s Grand Prize honors recognized a range of voices and subjects. Evan Dash was named Grand Prize Winner for A Dash of Good, a work that strongly resonated with judges and readers. Second Place Grand Prize recognition was awarded to David Cancio and Humbert Cancio for Bound by Law, highlighting collaborative authorship and shared creative vision.
The event was also attended by a number of Grand Prize Finalists whose books span multiple genres and areas of focus. Among those present were Eric Aune, The End of the Beginning (The Ripple Effect); Jodi Velazquez, Know the Enemy: Preventing Weight Gain, Diabetes, & Disease; Jenna Guarneri, You Need PR: An Approachable Guide to Public Relations for Early-Stage Companies; and Vicky Giouroukakis, Growing Up in an Immigrant Household and Community: Essays by Descendants of Immigrants.
What continues to distinguish the Four Seasons Book Awards is its emphasis on sustained recognition rather than one-time accolades. By allowing authors to participate throughout the year and by connecting seasonal recognition to a larger Grand Prize framework, the program provides ongoing momentum and branding opportunities for writers at different stages of their careers.
The Times Square gathering underscored that commitment. Against a backdrop associated with global media, culture, and visibility, the event reinforced the idea that books and the people who create them remain a vital part of public conversation. The celebration was not only about honoring individual achievements but also about acknowledging the broader ecosystem of storytelling that continues to evolve across publishing models and genres.
