How Andromeda Technology Solutions Helps Manufacturers Strengthen IT Infrastructure and Cybersecurity

By: Ryan Kelly

Manufacturers today face growing challenges in IT management and cybersecurity. Jeff Borello, CEO and co-founder of Andromeda Technology Solutions, recently appeared on The Manufacturers’ Network Podcast with host Lisa Ryan to share his industry insights. Their conversation focused on how manufacturers can strengthen their IT infrastructure, improve security, and eliminate recurring IT headaches.

From Startup to Industry Leader

Borello’s journey in IT began 30 years ago when he and his two co-founders decided to build something of their own. “We were already managing computers and networks,” he recalls, “So we said; ‘let’s start a business doing this for others.’”

What began as a side hustle soon evolved into a full-scale IT solutions company with a growing team. Today, Andromeda continues to support a wide range of clients across various industries.

Along the way, the Andromeda team experimented with different business expansions, including telephone systems, physical security, and web design. However, as the company grew, Borello and his partners made a strategic decision to refocus exclusively on IT services. More specifically, they would offer IT services for manufacturing businesses with 25 to 200 Windows users.

Why Focus on Manufacturing?

The shift to specializing in manufacturing wasn’t random. Borello explains that a pivotal moment came when he met Jack Stack, the renowned business leader behind The Great Game of Business as well as the President and CEO of Springfield Remanufacturing Corporation (SRC).

“Jack talked about the manufacturing renaissance in the U.S. and the government’s investment in the sector. That was when we knew we needed to focus here,” Borello says.

This industry focus has allowed Andromeda to build IT strategies tailored to manufacturers’ needs—helping them modernize, secure their operations, and optimize their technology for long-term success.

The Hidden IT Vulnerabilities in Manufacturing

Throughout the podcast, Borello stresses the biggest risk manufacturers face: cybersecurity.

“Security has to be the first conversation,” he insists. “Every IT decision—whether it’s adding a new software system or upgrading hardware—must start with, ‘How does this affect security?’”

Manufacturers are frequent targets for cybercriminals due to the sensitive nature of their data and supply chain connections. Many small to mid-sized manufacturers underestimate their risk, believing they are too small to be attacked.

“That’s a dangerous mindset,” Borello warns. “Hackers love smaller companies because they often have weaker defenses.”

Preventing Recurring IT Issues

Beyond security, Borello highlights the importance of eliminating IT frustrations at the root. Instead of constantly fixing recurring issues, Andromeda takes a proactive approach:

  • Identifying root causes – If a bookkeeper is struggling with a six-year-old computer, replacing it might be the best long-term fix.
  • Strategic IT roadmaps – Andromeda works with manufacturers to plan 1-3 years ahead, helping IT systems evolve alongside the business.
  • Reducing downtime – By eliminating repeat IT problems, manufacturers can focus on production rather than troubleshooting technology failures.

Cybersecurity Essentials: Key Steps for Manufacturers to Consider

Borello suggests four key cybersecurity steps that manufacturers may consider implementing:

  1. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) – “If your company isn’t using MFA for email and systems, stop everything and implement it today. It’s the biggest security hole we see.”
  2. Train Employees Regularly – Most breaches happen because of human error. “A one-time security training session isn’t enough. Employees need ongoing micro-training to stay alert.”
  3. Get Cyber Insurance – Ransomware attacks can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. “A strong cyber insurance policy is critical—it’s not about ‘if’ an attack happens, it’s ‘when.’”
  4. Conduct Regular Security Assessments – Even well-managed IT teams can have gaps. “If you haven’t had an external security assessment in a while, get one. It can uncover risks you didn’t know existed.”

Supporting Internal IT Teams in Achieving Success

For manufacturers with internal IT teams, bringing in an outsourced IT partner can sometimes feel like a threat.

Borello is clear: Andromeda isn’t there to replace internal IT teams—but to support them.

“We tell IT managers, ‘We’re here to make your life easier, not take your job,’” he says.

Andromeda works closely with internal teams to fill gaps, offload time-consuming tasks, and provide expertise where needed. Borello adds that their goal is, ultimately, to make the IT manager look good.

“We want them to be successful, and we have plenty of customers who will say we’ve helped them do just that.”

Considering IT as an Investment Instead of an Expense

Too many manufacturers see IT as a necessary cost rather than a business advantage. Borello believes this mindset must change.

“You walk into most offices and there’s someone frustrated with their computer—it slows down work, lowers productivity, and creates stress,” he explains. “That’s why investing in reliable IT isn’t just about security—it’s about keeping employees happy and operations running smoothly.”

The Future of IT in Manufacturing

Looking ahead, Borello sees AI and automation becoming more integrated into manufacturing IT strategies. However, he cautions against chasing the latest trend before getting the basics right.

“You can’t build AI on top of a weak IT foundation,” he says. Before diving into new technology, Borello encourages manufacturers to make sure they (1) have strong security measures, (2) are using modern infrastructure, and (3) have a clear roadmap.

How to Obtain a Security Assessment

For manufacturers unsure of their cybersecurity readiness, Borello provides a 40-question security assessment to help businesses evaluate their vulnerabilities.

“There’s no obligation—it’s just a simple way to see where you stand,” he says.

Borello and his team at Andromeda Technology Solutions are on a mission to help manufacturers strengthen their IT, eliminate recurring issues, and protect against cyber threats.

“If your IT is holding your business back, it’s time to fix it,” he says. “The right strategy—and the right partner—can turn IT into a competitive advantage.”
