Covid-19 source still unknown, but raccoon fox could be linked

Covid-19The Covid-19 virus triggered a worldwide pandemic in 2020, causing devastation on the earth with long-term ramifications.

While there is now a vaccine to combat the virus, its origins remain unclear, which usually sparks passionate political debate.

Regardless of the virus’s origins, study has mostly focused on the pandemic beginning with animal viral spillover.

There is no strong evidence that the virus was leaked from a lab, either unintentionally or on purpose.


The US intelligence community is divided on which scenario is most credible.

The FBI and the Department of Energy are leaning more toward the virus leaking from a lab.

The National Intelligence Council, on the other hand, believes Covid-19 evolved spontaneously.

The bulk of agencies, however, have reached a questionable conclusion.

The National Intelligence Council stated that the intelligence community’s available information on which to base its projections were doubtful, fragmented, or restricted.

The pertinent intelligence may soon become public, since US President Joe Biden signed legislation on March 20 that requires the declassification of government information on the virus’s origin within 90 days.

Although theories swirl, a DNA investigation appears to fit the jigsaw puzzle of the overflow problem, with the raccoon dog at the center.

The latest evidence

During a news briefing on March 17, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus limited the origins of Covid-19 to a bare minimum.

“These data do not provide a definitive answer to how the pandemic began,” he said.

“But every piece of data is important to moving us closer to that answer.”

The first human Covid-19 cases were discovered in Wuhan, China, specifically at the Huanon Seafood Wholesale Market.

In 2020, environmental samples from the market’s southwest included both animal genetic material and coronavirus.

On the corner, live animals were also sold.

Alex Crits-Christoph, a computational scientist, and his international colleagues detected virus-positive specimens on the DNA of the common raccoon dog.

The fox-like animal found across Asia is vulnerable to coronavirus infections, particularly SARDS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

The virus might have transmitted from bats to raccoon dogs or other animals at the market before infecting people, according to the researchers.

Their hypothesis is based on the detection of animal and coronavirus residues in the same samples.

The findings were released on Zenodo, a website that allows academics to share unpublished research findings with their colleagues, on March 20.

Crits-Christoph and his colleagues conducted the present investigation using publicly available genetic data provided in early March by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The information is linked to a preliminary study from the Chinese CDC dated February 2022, allowing the researchers to narrow down on an animal stand in the market’s southwest with the largest number of virus-positive samples.

A cart sample in the stall included a lot of genetic material from raccoon dogs, ducks, and other animals.

The lack of human DNA in the sample also suggests that the animals were in close contact with the coronavirus.

According to the research, raccoon dogs (or other animals) may have transported the coronavirus from bats to people.


While the evidence seems impressive, Tedros adds that the findings do not support the idea of spillover.

The presence of DNA from both animals and coronaviruses in samples merely indicates that they are linked.

Yet, the spillover theory is still hypothetical.

It’s unclear if the animals in the stalls were infected with Covid-19 or if they passed it on to humans.

A positive swab from a healthy animal from the market in late November or December 2019 would have been ideal, but it is now impossible to get.

When inspectors investigated the auction in early 2020, the sick animals were most likely gone.

Covid-19 has subsequently evolved, morphing in people to form alpha, delta, and omicron versions, which have in turn produced other variants.

Covid-19 is also developing in animals.

Coronaviruses seen in animals today (or two years ago), for example, would not resemble SARS-CoV-2 by the end of 2019, and hence would not match.

“It’s like a cold criminal case,” said the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis epidemiologist Michael Osterholm.

“There may be mounting evidence that, you know, John Doe did it. But not conclusive enough to try John Doe for the crime.”

I Am Legend sequel confirms the real ending

I Am LegendDuring the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, people passed the time by watching movies, watching TV, and reading books.

The 2007 Will Smith movie I Am Legend was one of the works of media that received the greatest attention.

The split climax of the film led to a number of misunderstandings.

Although the theatrical ending gave the impression that it was a single effort, the alternate ending raised expectations for a sequel.

The version that was considered to be the correct version was hotly debated.

Will Smith will return to the film as Dr. Robert Neville, hence the alternative ending has officially been accepted as canon.

The news

Will Smith playing the same part in many sequel films has been considered throughout the years.

The earliest days before the infected overran New York would have been depicted in a 2008 proposal, which was eventually abandoned.

No action was taken after a second proposal.

Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan will serve as producers and performers for the I Am Legend sequel, which was officially revealed last year.

The film’s screenwriter, Akiva Goldsman, is also returning.

The first movie

I Am Legend, a 1954 book by Richard Matheson, served as a loose inspiration for the post-apocalyptic movie from 2007.

In the movie, a virus causes mass extinction, leaving just Robert Neville in New York.

Originally intended to treat cancer, the virus instead transformed its victims into Darkseekers, mutant vampires that only come to life at night.

Neville seeks to use his blood to create a cure with his immunity.

Sam, Neville’s sole canine companion, dies, and Neville leads an assault on the Darkseekers.

Two immune humans called Anna and Ethan respond to his broadcast and rush to save him.

Once Robert Neville discovers the remedy, the alpha Darkseeker that had been pursuing them the previous evening attacks his home.

Before imprisoning Anna and Ethan in a coal tunnel, Neville administers the cure to them.

He then kills himself and the Darkseekers with a grenade.

After that, Anna and Ethan arrive at a camp for survivors where they give the cure to the soldiers.

Alternate ending

The alternative conclusion is a little bit more in line with the book.

When the Darkseekers invade Neville’s lab, the alpha doodles a butterfly that strikingly resembles the tattoo on the female Darkseeker that Neville had caught.

He returns the female instead of engaging in combat, which causes the alpha to look down on him and consider murdering him.

But, the alpha and the rest of the Darkseekers disperse.

Neville is aware that they think of him as a monster.

The next morning, he gives up looking for a cure and goes with Anna and Ethan to look for a survivors’ colony.


The changed ending will be followed by the subsequent I Am Legend sequel.

According to screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, the sequel will take place a number of decades after the alternative conclusion.

He also highlighted how The Last of Us’ HBO version was an inspiration.

“I’m obsessed with The Last of Us, where we see the world just post-apocalypse but also after a 20 – 30 year lapse,” said Goldsman.

“You see how the earth reclaims the world, and there’s something beautiful in the question of, as man steps away from being the primary tenant, what happens?”

“That will be especially visual in New York. I don’t know if they’ll climb up to the Empire State Building, but the possibilities are endless.”

In order to be more clear, Goldsman opted to adapt the alternate ending’s plot for the sequel.

“What Matheson was talking about was that man’s time on the planet as the dominant species had come to an end,” said the writer.

“That’s a really interesting thing we’re going to get to explore. There will be a little more fidelity to the original text.”

The director of I Am Legend 2 is still unknown because the film is still in the planning phases.

FGF21 shots in mice might be a solution to sobering up faster

FGF21While some people can drink a few bottles of beer without becoming inebriated, others are not so lucky.

Intoxicated people are frequently advised to wait for sobriety to take effect.

Now, new studies have emerged that may lead to a speedier sobering up than before.

The study

In the March issue of 7 Cell Metabolism, researchers described injecting drunk mice with a natural hormone.

The treatment prompted the mice to awaken immediately.

According to the paper, the mice were given an injection of FGF21, a hormone generated by the liver.

The injection shook the mice out of their drunken coma twice as fast as the group that did not receive the shot.

The discoveries, according to molecular endocrinologist David Mangelsdorf, might be game changers in the treatment of alcohol toxicity.

Alcohol poisoning 

When there is too much alcohol in the bloodstream near the brain, it causes alcohol poisoning or overdose.

Multiple life-sustaining systems, such as breathing, heart rate, and temperature regulation, are frequently disabled.

The following are some of the symptoms of an alcohol overdose:

FGF21’s sobering effect is not the first time the hormone has been linked to alcohol use.

Previously, scientists proved that when alcohol enters the bloodstream, the liver produces the hormone.

Despite the fact that FGF21 does not break down alcohol, researchers determined that the hormones play a vital function in protecting the liver from the harmful effects of alcohol.

It also dampens the urge to keep drinking in mice and monkeys.

The research

David Mangelsdorf of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and his colleagues were intrigued in how FGF21 affects alcohol recovery based on the findings.

Mangelsdorf and his colleagues injected mice with enough alcohol to knock them out and then timed how long it took them to wake up.

Animals that had been genetically engineered to be unable to produce FGF21 slept for an hour and a half longer than normal mice.

Meanwhile, the usual mice were provided with a second dosage of FGF21 to help them wake up even faster (twice as quickly) than the mice treated.

Inebriated mice injected with FGF31 were able to keep balanced longer than the others when placed on a gently spinning platform.


FGF21, according to the researchers, may help mice wake up by activating nerve cells in a brain area that promotes alertness.

If the hormone works similarly in people, Mangeldorf believes it may be used to revive persons who have been poisoned by alcohol.

With the possibility of unintentionally choking, the talent might be incredibly beneficial.

Furthermore, doctors often wait for those who have been poisoned by alcohol to awaken before addressing their symptoms.

“There is no drug for treating alcohol poisoning,” said Mangelsdorf.

He noted that having a drug to help people wake up would be a significant step forward in emergency room therapy.

He cited Narcan, a medication that aids patients in regaining consciousness following an opioid overdose.

Past attempts

Beforehand, researchers discovered strategies to sober up mice.

Despite its efficacy, the regimen did not have the same effect on everybody.

According to David Mangelsdorf, FGF21 may be a different tale.

He cited a prior study that focused on the hormone in monkeys, which are more human-like than mice.

Drugs derived from FGF21 would not need to be isolated to treat alcohol toxicity.

According to Lorenzo Leggio, a physical scientist at the National Institutes of Health in Baltimore, researchers seek to use the hormone to treat liver disease and alcohol addiction.

He feels, however, that the study is a critical step toward understanding FGF21 and developing innovative therapeutics for alcoholism and other illnesses.
