The Addams Family has been an entertainment staple since the 1960s and made waves with big budget films in the 1990s.
Recently, The Addams Family has regained popularity, with animated films being released in the last couple of years and a series coming to Netflix.
This time around, the Netflix series will revolve around Wednesday Addams.
The plot
Wednesday brings a mix of genres, including comedy, fantasy, horror, and mystery, billed as a coming-of-age series.
The eight-episode series follows Wednesday Addams through her student life at Nevermore Academy.
Netflix released an official synopsis which reads:
“Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.”
The family & other cast
On Wednesday, Addams will be played by rising star Jenna Ortega, while Isaac Ordonez will play his brother Pugsley.
Ortega’s casting was announced in May 2021 when she posted a photo on Instagram with the pilot’s script.
It wasn’t until this year that photos of Ortega as Wednesday Addams emerged.
Catherine Zeta-Jones takes the helm as the iconic Morticia, alongside Luis Guzman as her devoted husband Gomez.
The cast includes Thora Birch, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, Georgie Farmer, Moosa Mostafa, Emma Myers, Naomi J. Ogawa, Joy Sunday, Percy Hynes White and Gwendoline Christie.
Christina Ricci, the Wednesday Addams of the 1990 films, is also on board.
However, Deadline reports that she’ll be playing a new character on Wednesday, not “an older version.”
The trailer
Netflix released the full official trailer on Wednesday, August 17.
The two-minute trailer shows Wednesday moving through a color palette in the high school hallway.
The voiceover reveals how troublesome she was in school, saying, “Ms. Addams, you’ve certainly had a very interesting educational journey. Eight schools in five years.”
Wednesday goes to a private swim session by the pool, where she drops two bags with piranhas to attack a water polo team for bullying her brother.
“I did the world a favor,” she told her parents on Wednesday of her deportation.
“People like Dalton shouldn’t be allowed to procreate. Getting expelled was just a bonus.”
As a result of her actions, Morticia and Gomez send Wednesday to Nevermore Academy, where the parents first met.
“Finally, you will be among peers who understand you,” says Morticia. “Maybe you’ll even make some friends.”
Using clips from the academy, they give viewers a taste of what to expect – gothic school uniforms, spiders, cemeteries, ominous forests and a school dance.
“Little did I know I was stepping into a nightmare full of mystery, mayhem, and murder. I think I’m going to love it here,” smiled Wednesday.
The trailer ends with the legendary double take of the Addams Family from the theme music.
Release
Wednesday is due out on Netflix in the fall.
While no specific date has been set, Rob Zombie, the writer, producer and director of the upcoming The Munsters reboot, shared that the two programs will be released concurrently.
