Grammy Awards post strict rules for AI-generated music

Grammy — Technology has been a crucial instrument in music creation, and musicians have risen to fame in recent decades as a result of years of invention.

Cher pioneered the usage of auto-tune in the late 1990s with her hit “Believe,” ushering in a new era of music production.

Auto-tune would become a big contributor to various performers throughout the 2000s and 2010s.

As 2023 approached, artificial intelligence began to gain traction in a variety of industries, and it wouldn’t be long until music was exposed to a new set of revolutionary tools.

While widely debated, the usage of AI-generated music has proven difficult to ignore, even for the prestigious Grammy Awards.

Many people were surprised when the grand stage of the music business issued its decision on the usage of AI-generated music.

It does, however, come with certain tight rules.

Considerations

The Recording Academy, the institution in charge of the Grammy Awards, established new guidelines ahead of the 2024 ceremony.

The guidelines state that “human creators” are eligible.

While songs featuring AI-generated music can be nominated, evidence of human contribution is required.

“If there’s an AI voice singing the song or AI instrumentation, we’ll consider it,” said Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy.

“But in a songwriting-based category, it has to have been written mostly by a human.”

The guideline

The 66th Grammy Awards will be held on February 24, 2024, and the guidelines give further information on how they will address AI-generated music.

“The Grammy Award recognizes excellence. Only human creators are eligible to be submitted for consideration for, nominated for, or win a Grammy Award,” it wrote.

“A work that contains no human authorship is not eligible in any Categories. A work that features elements of AI material is eligible in applicable categories.”

“However: the human authorship component of the work submitted must be meaningful and more than de minimis; such human authorship component must be relevant to the category in which such work is entered.”

“The authors of any AI material incorporated into the work are not eligible to be nominees or Grammy recipients insofar as their contribution to the portion of the work that consists of such AI material is concerned.”

Accommodating the future

Mason admitted that artificial intelligence will affect the music industry’s future.

He encouraged the Grammys to address AI-related concerns rather than dismiss them.

“How can we adapt to accommodate? How can we set guardrails and standards?” Mason challenged.

“There are a lot of things that need to be addressed around AI as it relates to our industry.”

Deepfake vocals

The Grammy rules come at a time when AI-generated music has taken over the internet, with deepfake tunes becoming viral.

For example, David Guetta, a two-time Grammy winner, used AI to replace Eminem on an Eminem single earlier this year.

The fake single “Heart on My Sleeve” featuring AI-generated Drake and The Weeknd, on the other hand, received the most attention.

Universal Music Group ordered that the music be deleted, claiming copyright violations.

According to a UMG spokesman, the AI-generated song posed an important dilemma to music industry stakeholders, pushing them to choose between the side of humanity and the need for creative expression and the side of fraud that denies artists their just recompense.

Universal Music Group allegedly requested that streaming giants Spotify and Apple Music prohibit AI software startups from utilizing the label’s music.

As indicated by the increase of deepfake tracks, AI software businesses generally train their technology with the label’s songs.

Artists and AI

Sir Paul McCartney has announced plans for a “final Beatles record” to be released through AI with the assistance of filmmaker Peter Jackson.

“He [Jackson] was able to extricate John’s voice from a ropey little bit of cassette that had John [Lennon]’s voice and a piano,” said McCartney.

“He could separate them with AI — he could tell the machine, “That’s the voice, that’s the guitar, lose the guitar,” and he did that, so it has great uses.”

“We were able to take John’s voice and get it pure through this AI,” McCartney added.

“So then we could mix the record as you would normally do.”

Meanwhile, songwriter Don McLean claims that AI-generated music will not be “worse” than some of today’s tracks.

However, Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter says AI’s prominence isn’t what his old band stood for.

“We tried to use these machines to express something extremely moving that a machine cannot feel, but a human can,” said Bangalter.

“We were always on the side of humanity and not on the side of technology.”

Billy McFarland creates another “big” music festival

Billy McFarland has tarnished his name by attempting to host one of the biggest parties in the world: the Fyre Festival.

However, the whole world witnessed the event flop.

You’d think Billy McFarland would learn his lesson, but he’s now ready to create a new event.

This time the next event takes place in the virtual world.

The news

Billy McFarland is currently trying to rebuild his name with another major music festival.

However, for the brave few who want to hear about the creator of the Fyre Festival and enjoy the music festival, they should shell out $250.

Even stranger is the revelation that McFarland will use the $50 from ticket sales to pay off his debt.

Details

Billy McFarland shared his plans online with a video from TikTok.

He announced to the world that the music festival would be called PYRT (pronounced pirate).

In a short video, the creator of Fyre Festival explained that PYRT would partner with a remote destination.

They welcome artists, content creators, entrepreneurs and others willing to join the PYRT crew.

The virtual aspect

Although PYRT is strongly reminiscent of the Fyre Festival, prospective audiences need not fear being stranded on a tropical island.

Billy McFarland dubs the event a “virtual immersive and decentralized reality.”

However, he said the event would not be part of the Metaverse.

Instead, McFarland says the technology is very close to the Metaverse.

The Fyre Festival creator added that the event would be held in either the Bahamas or a similar location.

The latter is more probable since the Bahamas government does not want to ally itself with Billy McFarland.

The Bahamian reception

Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper released a statement following McFarland’s teaser in November.

Cooper wrote:

“The public is advised that no application has been made to the Government of the Bahamas for consideration of any event promoted by Billy McFarland or any entity or parties known to be associated with him.”

“The Government of the Bahamas will not endorse or approve any event in the Bahamas associated with him.”

The Bahamian politician also called McFarland a fugitive, noting he had several pending charges filed by the Royal Bahamas Police Force.

Fyre Festival aftermath

The creator of the Fyre festival has since written to the government to apologize for the damage it has caused.

“My main focus is how I can right the wrongs and how I can make the Bahamas and Family Islands, a region I care so deeply about, whole again,” wrote McFarland.

Billy McFarland was sentenced to six years in prison for fraud in 2018.

He was also ordered to pay $26 million for the mess of a music festival.

McFarland was accused of defrauding investors from $27.4 million and was later convicted of selling festival tickets and other events.

Mariah Carey allegedly lip-synced on Thanksgiving

Mariah Carey was one of the performers who performed at Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, performing her most iconic song at the NYC event.

However, people accused the superstar of lip-syncing.

The performance

As with the annual American Thanksgiving tradition, the inflatables towered over the streets of New York.

The crowd watched, cheered and cheered as the floats passed by.

The Queen of Christmas was introduced earlier than usual for her Thanksgiving performance.

Despite the early performance, Mariah Carey lived up to her title when she performed “All I Want for Christmas is You.”

The dancers were dressed in ballet outfits and nutcrackers and leaped around the singer, who stood in the middle.

Mariah Carey wore a red dress under a huge umbrella. But, as usual, her singing was flawless.

However, people online are questioning the singer’s performance.

Reaction

Many on Twitter wondered if Mariah Carey was actually singing or letting the backing track do most of the singing.

“People gotta [sic] stop having Mariah Carey lip sync,” one person tweeted. “She’s so bad at it.”

“Well, yet another ‘interesting’ performance from @MariahCarey at the Thanksgiving Day parade,” followed another.

“Not quite in sync with the lip sync all the time and was she bolted to the float?”

A third chimed in, saying, “Honestly gotta respect that Mariah just had to stand there and lip sync for the whole country to love her today.”

Other celebrities

Mariah Carey wasn’t alone, as Rita Ora faced the same allegations four years ago.

With lip-syncing debates prominent on social media, fellow singer John Legend decided to shed more light on the situation.

“Fun fact. We all have to lip sync on this parade because the floats don’t have the capacity to handle the sound requirements for a live performance,” Legend tweeted.

“Hope y’all enjoyed it anyway. Know that if you come to my shows, the vocals are 100% live!”

Whether or not Mariah Carey was lip-syncing, her performance continued a trend seen this time of year for 28 years.

“All I Want for Christmas is You” began to climb the charts upon the conclusion of Halloween.

Billboard claims the 1994 song entered the Hot 100 at number 25 this year.

Kanye West Yeezy office story emerges

Kanye West, now known as Ye, may have had a fallout, but his past antics remain a hot topic to this day.

According to a former employee of the Adidas Yeezy shoe line, an employee lost their job after a small request for a music change.

The story

A former Adidas employee revealed he became anxious on a typical day at the office when a colleague asked Kanye West to switch the music.

According to a Rolling Stone story, Ye played his songs loudly through the speakers.

Some enjoyed the music, but others didn’t.

In addition, the space was filled by an exceptional team of designers and tailors, drawn away from the biggest European fashion houses.

The worker asked Kanye West to change the music.

The rapper looked around the workplace and then at their colleague.

Kanye West asked the staff what they would like to play instead of his back catalog.

The request

According to Rolling Stone, the worker was more of a punk and rock fan than hip-hop.

“I thought, ‘Oh, he’s a rapper, I should probably mention some rap,'” the ex-employee said.

The former employee forgot that he was dealing with one of the most difficult musicians in the industry.

They then suggested that Kanye West play Drake instead.

“Big mistake,” the former employee said. “The next day, I was fired.”

Other events

While there was no need for the unexpected layoff, the employee wasn’t alone in the brand when Ye worked with the Yeezy shoe line.

Rolling Stone spoke to several former employees and shared that sudden layoffs were common in Yeezy.

Many employees described the office as “a revolving door of talent.”

The Yeezy office culture made employees feel that their jobs were in constant danger.

Adidas

After Kanye West made problematic and antisemitic comments online and in the press, many brands broke ties with the rapper.

Adidas is one of the brands that separated from Ye.

Although the deal cost them hundreds of millions of dollars, Adidas continues to sell Yeezy shoes.

However, they will sell them under a different name.

According to CNN, Adidas plans to continue benefiting from the Yeezy line’s intellectual property.

Harm Ohlmeyer, Adidas’ chief financial officer, said in a phone call about quarterly earnings:

“Going forward, we will leverage the existing inventory with the exact plans being developed as we speak.”

Andy Taylor announces cancer diagnosis through letter

Andy Taylor of the renowned British band Duran Duran recently revealed he is currently fighting stage IV prostate cancer.

Duran Duran announced the news to the world on Saturday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles while being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Andy Taylor could not reunite with former bandmates John Taylor, Simon Le Bon, Roger Taylor and Nick Rhodes at the Class of 2022 celebrations.

He was going through treatment and instead wrote a letter for the occasion.

Duran Duran frontman Le Bon read Taylor’s letter to the public, where Andy Taylor revealed he had his diagnosis four years ago.

The guitarist also wrote about being honored for being inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The letter

“There’s nothing that comes close to such recognition,” Andy Taylor wrote.

“You can dream about what happened to us, but to experience it, on one’s own terms, as mates, was beyond incredible.”

Taylor also raised his health issues: “Many families have experienced the slow burn of this disease, and of course, we are no different.”

“So I speak from the perspective of a family man, but with profound humility to the band, the greatest fans a group could have, and this exceptional accolade.”

Andy Taylor shared his disappointment at missing out on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame show, which was to be his first performance with Duran Duran in nearly two decades.

The Duran Duran guitarist had even bought a new guitar for the occasion.

“I’m so very proud of these four brothers, I’m amazed at their durability, and I’m overjoyed at accepting this award.”

“I often doubted the day would come. I’m sure as hell glad I’m around to see the day.”

Taylor’s condition

In his letter, which can also be found on the band’s website, Andy Taylor said his condition was terminal.

However, he reassured fans that he has been on life-extending treatment, which kept him going until recently when he suffered a setback.

“Although my current condition is not immediately life-threatening, there is no cure,” said Taylor.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight men is likely to develop prostate cancer during their lifetime.

“I don’t think that would be very appropriate, but that’s what I feel like.”

Award-Winning English Band Muse to Launch Ninth Album as NFT

While NFTs mostly revolve around digital art, musical NFTs are on the rise and legendary rock band Muse will join the NFT space with their ninth studio album.

The album

Muse will release the studio album Will of the People on August 26. This will be the very first release in the UK and Australia.

Will of the People is the band’s latest album, the latest since 2015 to be chart-eligible.

Prior to the conception of the album, the last format accepted by the international charts was the album stream.

Will of the People will be Digital Pressing’s flagship album on the Web3 Serenade Marketplace.

Serenade

The Web3 market created Digital Pressings to bea new limited edition and collectible music format released as NFTs.

Serenade uses the format to highlight community connectivity and product scarcity.

“Digital Pressings allow the music industry to easily slow NFTs into existing workflows and creative processes without having to fund new projects or design new ways of working,” said Max Shand, founder and CEO of Serenade.

“If you want to innovate in the music industry, innovate around the album cycle, because this is how the industry operates.”

In February, Serenade teamed up with the Brit Awards to showcase their NFT collection, which sold for $12.25 each.

NFT in music

The partnership between the band and Serenade is not the first to mark NFT’s involvement in the music industry.

NFTs used to be grouped into album releases or other types of music-related campaigns.

Will of the People is set to be the first full album as NFT.

While NFT albums existed as a graphic format before, Muse’s album will be the first to fall under these standards.

The Digital Pressing format offers a new standard in royalty management.

Serenade released an official press release, saying that “living on the blockchain and offering Web3 capabilities such as verifiable ownership and the ability to trade on secondary markets, a Digital Pressing will also accrue accurate, perpetual royalties for artists, copyright holders and content owners.”

Muse

Muse is an English rock band formed in 1994 but later released their debut album in 1999.

The group won the NME Awards for Best British Group in 2007, 2010 and 2011 and also won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2011 and 2016.

Muse first dived into the crypto space in 2020, collaborating with Dapper Lab’s CryptoKitties to create digital collectibles.

A year later, the band released their own NFT collection on Nifty Gateway.

The sentiments

Music industry experts believe the partnership is another step towards the future of music.

“Muse have always had a great appetite for innovation and pushing the boundaries of how they deliver their music to fans,” said Shand.

“So using this technology to elevate the experience of their new album made a lot of sense.”

“Muse was an obvious choice to be the first artist to offer fans a Digital pressing as they’re innovative and have a die hard audience of completist fans who have always displayed an appetite to collect great merchandise from the band,” he added.

Gifted Singer-Songwriter Gabe Griffin’s Inspiring Commitment to Creating Authentic Music

In their desire to find fame, so many aspiring artists resort to reducing their creativity to fit the prescribed formula that audiences like. However, Gabe Griffin knows that this is the biggest blunder any musician can make. After all, making great music is a deeply personal journey that entails its creators baring their souls. As such, the intuitive musician has committed himself to only creating genuine and authentic songs.

Born Gibson Gabriel Gabe Griffin Gerace, the 23-year-old singer and songwriter, is making waves for his heartfelt and honest style. When asked what pushes him to remain faithful to his originality, the insightful man profoundly explained, “When you make music for other people, you often strive to create art that you think people would like, leading to similar-sounding songs with no heart and creativity.”

“Music is subjective! You will never know what someone likes unless they listen to it, and you should share music that is a part of who you are. Artists can’t let what others think dictate how you approach your creative side,” he added.

On top of his awe-inspiring vision, Gabe Griffin is also known for his unmatched eloquence that allows him to pen lyrics that strike the hearts of listeners. His love for poetry began when he was only 15. Two years into honing the craft, his interest continued to grow, and the young creative soon realized he was also passionate about making music.

Because of this, he decided to pursue a music career, and the rest, as they say, is history. He has since composed several captivating singles such as “Sunrise,” “Perspectives,” and “Nature,” all of which are available on various digital platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music.

Aside from his undeniable musical prowess, what helps Gabe Griffin stand out is his commitment to staying true to his creative process and his brand. In fact, all of his releases highlight powerful messages of hope and positivity that aim to uplift their listeners, unlike the typical tracks on the mainstream scene that are only focused on having a replay value.

In addition, he possesses an incredible mindset and an impeccable work ethic. As a self-professed go-getter, he firmly believes in the importance of doing things today because every opportunity is fleeting. Moreover, he is cognizant that going through the motions is vital in finding out if something will work.

He wisely expressed, “All this hard work in creating music and sharing it with others may not work out in my favor, but I will never know unless I take a leap forward today, not tomorrow, not next year, but right now.”

Armed with this realization, Gabe Griffin aims to continue forging his unique path within the music scene moving forward. Additionally, he aims to push the boundaries of the music scene and show people how songs can impact their listeners. To accomplish this, he plans to create more songs that highlight his distinct style. Above all, the singer-songwriter is steadfast in his vision to champion the importance of authenticity, especially in an industry riddled with superficial standards.
