Justin Roiland: American adult animated science fiction sitcom Rick and Morty was developed by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon.

The program centers on the exploits of drunken and eccentric scientist Rick Sanchez and his kind-hearted but susceptible-to-manipulation grandson Morty Smith, who alternate between household life and transdimensional adventures.

Six seasons of the program have been made available since its December 2013 Adult Swim debut.

It has received recognition for its uniqueness, comedy, and intricate narrative.

However, Justin Roiland, a co-creator, has run into trouble after being accused of domestic abuse and false detention.

According to a criminal complaint submitted in May 2020, he was just accused in Orange County, California, of felony domestic assault.

On Thursday, the voice actor is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing.

The initial complaint

Justin Roiland entered a not-guilty plea to the event in 2020.

  1. Edward Welbourn is one of the voice actor’s lawyers.

In a statement, Edward Welbourn claimed that his client was innocent.

“We look forward to clearing Justin’s name and helping him move forward as swiftly as possible,” wrote Welbourn, who expects the case to be dismissed.

The 42-year-old is accused of the following in the case:

  • One felony of domestic battery with corporal injury
  • One felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit

The event allegedly happened around January 19, 2020, and involved an unnamed woman dating Roiland at the time.

According to Orange County Superior Court records, Justin Roiland entered a not-guilty plea in October 2020 to both allegations.

More than a dozen court sessions, including pre-trial hearings, have taken place concerning the case since then.

There has yet to be a definite date for the trial.

Roiland was charged in May 2020, but the exact dates of the proceedings have remained secret.

Although he was detained, Roiland was freed on a $50,000 bail in August 2020 and arraigned in October of the same year.

Documents

A protective order was filed in October 2020.

According to court records, Justin Roiland is forbidden from threatening, harassing, or spying on the subject of the protection order.

The order further directs Roiland to surrender any guns he owns or has access to and not come within 100 feet of the subject.

The court’s injunction is in effect until this coming October.

A protective order prevents the public from learning certain information about the case, including:

  • Police body camera footage
  • Police reports
  • Abuse investigation reports
  • Medical reports
  • Recordings of interviews

The affidavit used to justify Roiland’s arrest is still under wraps.

Plea

Roiland’s attorney said a plea deal is available during the hearing on Thursday, but he did not go into further detail.

The hearing didn’t last long, and it was decided to resume on April 27.

Roiland has been ordered to show up for the hearing.

One can find an American voice actor, animator, writer, producer, and director named Justin Roiland.

Additionally, he co-developed “Solar Opposites,” which debuted on Hulu in 2020, and voiced characters in the Cartoon Network series “Fish Hooks,” which he also created.

Rick and Morty, an animated television program on Adult Swim, is known for having Roiland as its co-creator, executive producer, and voice actor for both of the show’s titular characters.

He has also given the animation industry a number of additional contributions.

Additionally, he received recognition for his efforts on Rick and Morty by taking home the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program in 2018.

In September 2022, the sixth season of Rick and Morty debuted, and Cartoon Network commissioned a seventh in a long-term agreement for 70 new episodes.

Currently, Cartoon Network’s owner, Warner Bros. Discovery, has yet to comment.

After the 2020 trial

Roiland’s career expanded three years after the domestic violence case came to light.

He launched an NFT collection in 2021, which sold for more than $1.65 million.

At a Sotheby’s auction, Roiland also made his first painting sale.

In addition, he initiated a new NFT project in 2022.

The success of “Solar Opposites” on Hulu, which he co-created, allowed for a fifth season renewal last year.

A series called “Koala Man” in which he just participated in, will air later this month.

The video game “High on Life,” created by Justin Roiland’s Squanch Games studio, was launched last year.

During its first week of availability, “High on Life” surpassed all other games on Steam in terms of sales and ranked fourth on Xbox.
