An AI-generated piece from Midjourney sparks the wrath of the art community after winning an art competition

While AI has been of great use in multiple industries, it became a source of controversy when a man won an AI-generated image in an art contest.

Jason M. Allen, 39, was the winner when he submitted an image that won the digital art/digitally manipulated photography category at the Colorado State Fair last week.

The work submitted

According to CNN, Allen was nervous about participating, but his decision earned him the win and the $ 300 prize.

The picture “Théâtre D’opéra Spatial,” which translates to Space Opera Theater, shows a scene seemingly taken from a science fiction fantasy concept and shows women in Victorian dress looking into a portal.

Jason M. Allen, the man who sent the AI-generated image, is the founder and lead developer of the board game company Incarnate Games.

Based in Pueblo West, Colorado, Allen decided to take the opportunity of the competition.

“I’m fascinated by this imagery,” said Allen. “I love it. And I think everyone should see it.”

The tool that developed the image

While Jason M. Allen was delighted to win first prize on his first attempt at a competition, it turned out that he was using Midjourney.

Midjourney is a Discord-based AI art generator that has been making the rounds online recently.

It’s one of many AI image generators, like Google Research’s Imagen and OpenAI’s DALL-E 2.

The process

Although Allen didn’t go through the same processes as most artists, he said the image didn’t come easily.

He said there was a lot of work to be done.

Jason M. Allen said it took 80 hours to complete the job, playing with the phrases to create images of women wearing Victorian dresses and space helmets.

Allen developed over 900 iterations of the images sent by the women before disinfecting them in Photoshop.

He then ran the images through Gigapixel AI to improve the resolution and then printed the piece on canvas.

Reaction to the win

Allen’s use of AI to complete the work sparked outrage over the price, with many saying it took away the hard work people put into creating physically real works of art.

“Jason Allen, you are NOT an artist. You have never used actual tools. Just texts,” one Twitter user wrote.

“Midjourney can be fun, but it should never be used to cheat other artists.”

“That’s ridiculous,” another wrote to the Colorado State Fair’s tweet. “Makes your whole art competition less prestigious to the point where it’s laughable.”

“This is the literal definition of ‘pressed a few buttons to make a digital art piece’,” a user tweeted. “AI artwork is the ‘banana taped to the wall’ of the digital world now.”

Meanwhile, Jason M. Allen remains unmoved at the front desk, saying:

“I’m not going to apologize for it… I won and I didn’t break any rules.”

Despite his victory, Allen agrees with others that AI-generated art should be placed in a separate category in the future.

“I’m okay with that, there’s no problem with that,” said Allen. “But someone had to be first.”

Recently, football’s global governing body, FIFA, announced that it will launch an NFT platform with football-themed digital collectibles.

The announcement came in time as the 2022 World Cup approaches.

The FIFA NFT platform will be called FIFA+ Collect and will be launched at the end of this month.

The platform offers affordable, accessible and inclusive NFTs that showcase some of the best moments of this beautiful sport.

Once the World Cup takes place in Qatar at the end of November, moments from the world football tournament will likely be transformed into digital collectibles.

FIFA Commercial Director Romy Gai released a statement stating:

“Just like sports memorabilia and stickers, this is an accessible opportunity for fans around the world to engage with their favorite players, moments, and more on new platforms.”


FIFA+ Collect runs on the Algorand blockchain, a proof-of-stake alternative to Ethereum and Solana.

The Algorand blockchain was developed by MIT professor Silvio Micali.

In May, the Algorand blockchain made FIFA its lead partner in a timely World Cup deal.

The deal covers the Women’s World Cup 2023 and takes it a long way on the FIFA+ Collect platform with momentum.

Blockchain has taken a narrow and more defined approach to partnership agreements, rather than casting a wide net in the hope of reaching an agreement.

Outside of FIFA, sports facilities in the blockchain ecosystem are largely inactive, with limited exposure to transactions involving less physical sports like chess and drone racing.


The blockchain platform made headlines earlier this year after acquiring Napster, a digital music sharing service.

It also partnered with LimeWire, one of the first peer-to-peer music sharing services, to launch a music-centric NFT market with songs from Universal Music Group-affiliated artists.

Despite the size of their deal, Algorand will not be alone in Doha.

In early March, announced that it would be the exclusive sponsor of the World Cup.

However, the company could limit its sports partnership program.

Last week, the company reportedly dropped a $495 million sponsorship deal with UEFA, the European Champions League.

Improved notifications

With the Android 13 system, applications can no longer display notifications unless the user allows it.

Once installed, opening new apps will open a permissions pop-up asking users to allow or deny notifications.

Scan the QR code faster

Previously, on Android devices, users had to download a third-party app from the Google Assistant to scan QR codes.

Apps often slow down or don’t work at all, but Android 13 introduces QR code scanning in the Quick Settings panel.

Improved battery information

Android 13’s system adds a significant upgrade to battery life, particularly with apps affecting battery.

When an app causes excessive battery drain, Android 13 alerts users with a silent notification so they can force the app to close or restart.

UWB support

Ultra-broadband, or UWB, is a first in the world of technology and allows users to act as a car key or a finder for misplaced devices.

UWB also improves NFC and Bluetooth connectivity.

The problem with the old UWB support was that it required the built-in UWB.

With Android 13, a hardware abstraction layer adds functionality so that all Android devices can implement UWB.

Customizable lock screen

When Material You first launched, users complained about the size of the clock on the lock screen.

Android 13 allows users to disable the clock by turning off the double-line clock toggle in settings.

Android 13 privacy and security

Android 13 will introduce an improved user privacy and security experience, add more restrictions to apps, and allow users to choose what permissions and what data is accessible.

Permissions include file types such as audio, image, and video.

Among the security fixes introduced by the system is automatically clearing clipboard contents after a certain interval.

As a result, apps no longer have access to the oldest items on the clipboard, a recurring problem in the past.

The security update also prevents users from accidentally sharing copied texts with the wrong people.

App permissions for Android 13 activation include automatic revocation of permissions from apps that have not been used for a certain period of time.

The launch of the Ripper Skipper 2022 NFTs shows that the AFL is following in the footsteps of other international sports codes who have delved into Web3. NBA Top Shot received critical acclaim in 2020, and earlier this year the UFC presented UFC Strike.

Ripper Skipper 2022 is not alone as other Australian sports codes have done the same.

Cricket Australia (CA) and the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) both signed multi-year licensing agreements with Singapore-based collectors platform Rario and trading company NFT BlockTrust in April.

The Russia-Ukraine War: How the Drones Are Used

Russia and Ukraine used a wide range of weapons and technologies, but drones were the main weapon for both sides.

Thousands of drones were used during the invasion to locate, launch missiles and direct artillery fire on the enemy.


As both sides use different technology, Ukraine has deployed a military drone, the Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2.

Drones are the size of small aircraft with cameras and can be armed with laser-guided bombs.

Dr. Jack Watling of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) research center says Ukraine started with Bayraktar’s fleet of “less than 50”.


According to Dr. Watling, Russia mainly used Orlan-10, a small and simple UAV.

“Russia started the war with some thousands of them, and may have a few hundred left,” he said.

Orlan drones have cameras and can carry small bombs.

Drone effectiveness

Two drones helped locate enemy targets and directed artillery fire.

“Russian forces can bring their guns to bear on the enemy within only three to five minutes of an Orlan-10 drone spotting a target,” noted Dr. Watling.

However, without it, the attack can last 20-30 minutes.

Dr. Marina Meron, a defense researcher at King’s College London, noted that drones have allowed Ukraine to expand its limited military.

“If you wanted to seek out enemy positions in the past, you would have had to send out special forces units to do it,” she says. 

“You might lose some troops. Now, all you’re risking is a drone.”

When the war broke out, the usefulness of Bayraktar drones was widely praised in Ukraine.

“They were shown attacking targets, such as ammunition dumps, and played a part in the sinking of the [warship] Moskva,” Dr. Miron said.

Though widely applauded, many Bayraktar were destroyed by enemy defenses over the course of several months.

“They are largely, relatively slow-moving, and fly at only medium altitude,” Dr. Watling pointed out.

“That makes them easy to shoot down.”

Non-military drones

The high price makes it difficult to replace the drone. For example, the Bayraktar TB2 is priced at $2 million.

As a result, Ukraine uses small commercial models like the DJI Mavic 3, which costs just over $2,000.

A Ukrainian drone manufacturer speculates that the country has deployed 6,000 drones, but there is no confirmation.

Commercial drones can be equipped with small bombs, but are mainly used to identify and directly attack enemy forces.

Commercial drones have a range of only 30km and a travel time of 46 minutes, making them less powerful than military drones.

“Ukraine doesn’t have as much ammunition as Russia,” says Dr. Miron.

“Having ‘eyes in the sky’ to spot targets and direct artillery fire means they can make better use of what they have.”

Drone suppliers

The White House says Russia has acquired Sahid military drones from Iran.

Houthi rebels in Yemen are using the same drones to attack targets in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has received a shipment of 700 “Kamikaze” Switchblade military aircraft from the United States.

Drones are filled with explosives and hover in the air until they find a target.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX also offers satellite communications in Ukraine which offers a safe relationship between drones and operators.

DJI stopped delivering drones in Russia and Ukraine.

Payments for Ukrainian drones

In addition to US donations, Ukraine has launched a crowdfunding campaign for the purchase of 200 military drones.

“As well as large drones like [Bayraktar] TB2, they are looking for small, fixed-wing reconnaissance drones,” said Dr. Watling.

Ukrainian winner of the Eurovision Song Contest “Kalush Orchestra” sold the trophy for $900,000.

They donated money to invite UAVs to purchase three Ukrainian PD-2 drones.

Apple is the top customer of the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company or TSMC.

The company often supplies chips to Pegatron, where iPhones are assembled in China.

Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan only adds to the strained relationship between the two.

As a result, the Communist Party of China has issued new rules prohibiting any mention of Taiwan or the Republic of China in shipping documents.

The regulations suggest that some (if not all) of the hardware can be returned to Taiwan, delaying the launch of the iPhone 14.

The “One China” policy

Pelosi’s visit was deemed a violation of the “one China” policy that the United States has followed for 50 years.

The policy states that the US government “acknowledges that all Chinese on either side of the Taiwan Strait maintain there is but one China and that Taiwan is a part of China.”

He also claims that the United States “does not challenge that position.”

While the United States has a formal relationship with the People’s Republic of China, it also has an “unofficial” relationship with Taiwan, which was made official with Pelosi’s visit, according to the People’s Republic of China.

The result

The visit prompted the People’s Republic of China to flex its military muscle, fly 68 fighter jets off the coast of Taiwan, send warships into the Taiwan Strait, and send drones to Japan.

The People’s Republic of China has also broken off talks with the United States over earlier projects.


Pegatron is a renowned Taiwanese electronics company specializing in computers, communications and consumer electronics.

During the visit, the company’s vice president and senior TSMC executives were seen with Pelosi, adding fuel to the fire.

Their actions could also lead to a bitter trade war between China and Taiwan, between which Apple and other US-based companies stand.

Apple has made it clear to its supply chain that this is an urgent matter as the iPhone 14 series is being assembled.

Other problems

With the iPhone 14 series unveiled in a few weeks, the last thing Apple needs is for shipments bound for the training assembly line to be rejected by customs and sent back to Taiwan.

The “Made in Taiwan” label on import declarations or shipping cartons from China may also result in shipments being blocked or rejected.

In addition, a fine of 4,000 yen or 592 US dollars may also be imposed.

Meanwhile, Taiwan requires all export products to carry a label indicating the shipment’s origin, meaning they must be stamped as coming from Taiwan or the Republic of China, which Chinese customs don’t want to see.

Apple has warned Taiwan-based suppliers to develop contingency plans to avoid supply chain disruptions.

Apple has also instructed its supply chain to check and process labels on cartons and forms when needed for shipments from Taiwan to China.

According to CEO Howard Schultz, Starbucks will be making some changes to its rewards program – one of the most innovative ways for the company to retain customers.

Howard Schultz recently announced that Web3 would be an integral part of the company.

“We have been working on a very exciting new digital initiative that builds on our existing industry-leading digital platform in innovative new ways,” said Schultz.

“All centered around coffee and – most importantly – loyalty.”

The disclosure arrived on Tuesday during Starbucks’ third quarter 2022 earnings call.

A unique experience

According to Schultz, Starbucks will unveil the new digital initiative on September 13 during its annual Seattle Investor Day. 

The initiative enables Starbucks to build on its current reward program. In addition, this relevant model introduces new ways to involve customers emotionally by broadening the digital community approach of third parties and offering a broader range of rewards.

Schultz shared that the rewards will include unique experiences and digital collection objects as a reward and community structure element.

“This will create an entirely new set of digital network effects that will attract new customers and be accretive to existing customers in our core retail stores,” he explained.


Employees are not very optimistic about the relationship of the coffee company with Web3 initiatives.

During a presentation about NFTS in May, an employee named Mark spoke against the plan regarding the environmental impact of NFTs.

“Blockchain, whether it’s proof of stake or proof of work, is not planet positive,” he said.
