In a recent move, Qatar Airways has announced that they will be joining the metaverse. This follows closely after Facebook’s rebranding into Meta last year, which prompted many other brands to switch over from traditional social media platforms and go to virtual or augmented reality based instead.
The launch of Qatar Airways’ new virtual reality platform, Qverse is a breakthrough in transportation technology. The immersive experience lets users explore the airline’s Premium Check-in area at Hamad International Airport and more.
According to Qatar Airways the Qverse will be their first endeavor into this metaverse as they plan on expanding its virtual initiatives with an essential asset for human relations in mind.
The Qverse is an immersive, online platform that allows passengers to make decisions about their tickets before they buy them.
“We believe that the future is virtual,” the airline wrote in a statement. “The metaverse will empower human beings, expand their horizons, and break their limits by challenging the most basic methods that were once limitations.”
“That’s why we believe Qverse will change the way passengers make their shopping choices,” said company representatives.
The airline Qatar Airways has announced plans to add new features, places and interactions on the metaverse platform in order for users to have an enjoyable experience. The Oculus Quest VR device will be used as part of this project.
The company plans to integrate ticket purchase and seat choice for physical flights on real aircraft through the metaverse, noting that actions in this digital world may happen one day. Qatar cited Decentraland as an example of what’s possible with their integration into airline operations.
“We are currently focusing on creating our metaverse rather than investing in Decentraland or Sandbox. But we do not rule out this plan,” Qatar Airways shared. “We continue to explore how we can develop this area and strategically incorporate NFTs into Qverse.”
Qatar Airways is leading the way in blockchain by pioneering an innovative project that will revolutionize air travel for years to come. The company has incorporated IATA’s Digital Passport into their system.
The United States Air Force has applied for a trademark to enter the metaverse called SpaceVerse. Although details are still kept under wraps, this order highlights that space will be used as an operations environment and training ground.
