Everything about Halitosis or Bad Breath

What is halitosis?

Bad breath is a common problem that can cause significant psychological distress and the common reason is lack of oral hygiene.  Halitosis is the third most common reason that people seek dental care, after tooth decay and gum disease. Simple home remedies and lifestyle changes, such as improved dental hygiene and quitting smoking, can often remove the issue. If bad breath persists, however, it is advisable to visit a doctor to check for underlying causes. According to MedicalNewsDaily, these are the causes.

Potential causes of bad breath include:

  • Tobacco: Tobacco products cause their own types of mouth odor. Additionally, they increase the chances of gum disease which can also cause bad breath.
  • Food: The breakdown of food particles stuck in the teeth can cause odors. Some foods such as onions and garlic can also cause bad breath. After they are digested, their breakdown products are carried in the blood to the lungs where they can affect the breath.
  • Dry mouth: Saliva naturally cleans the mouth. If the mouth is naturally dry or dry due to a specific disease, such as xerostomia, odors can build up.
  • Dental hygiene: Brushing and flossing ensure the removal of small particles of food that can build up and slowly break down, producing odor. A film of bacteria called plaque builds up if brushing is not regular. This plaque can irritate the gums and cause inflammation between the teeth and gums called periodontitis. Dentures that are not cleaned regularly or properly can also harbor bacteria that cause halitosis.
  • Crash diets: Fasting and low-carbohydrate eating programs can produce halitosis. This is due to the breakdown of fats producing chemicals called ketones. These ketones have a strong aroma.
  • Drugs: Certain medications can reduce saliva and, therefore, increase odors. Other drugs can produce odors as they breakdown and release chemicals in the breath. Examples include nitrates used to treat angina, some chemotherapy chemicals, and some tranquilizers, such as phenothiazines. Individuals who take vitamin supplements in large doses can also be prone to bad breath.
  • Mouth, nose, and throat conditions: Sometimes, small, bacteria-covered stones can form on the tonsils at the back of the throat and produce odor. Also, infections or inflammation in the nose, throat, or sinuses can cause halitosis.
  • Foreign body: Bad breath can be caused if they have a foreign body lodged in their nasal cavity, especially in children.
  • Diseases: Some cancers, liver failure, and other metabolic diseases can cause halitosis, due to the specific mixes of chemicals that they produce. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can cause bad breath due to the regular reflux of stomach acids.

Rarer causes of bad breath

As mentioned earlier, the most common reason for bad breath is oral hygiene, but other situations can also be to blame.

Rarer causes of bad breath include:

  • Ketoacidosis: When the insulin levels of a person with diabetes are very low, their bodies can no longer use sugar and begin to use fat stores instead. When fat is broken down, ketones are produced and build up. Ketones can be poisonous when found in large numbers and produce a distinctive and unpleasant breath odor. Ketoacidosis is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition.
  • Bowel obstruction: Breath can smell like feces if there has been a prolonged period of vomiting, especially if a bowel obstruction is present.
  • Bronchiectasis: This is a long-term condition in which airways become wider than normal, allowing for a build-up of mucus that leads to bad breath.
  • Aspiration pneumonia: A swelling or infection in the lungs or airways due to inhaling vomit, saliva, food, or liquids.

Symptoms

The specific odor of breath can vary depending on the cause of the problem. It is best to ask a close friend or relative to gauge your mouth odor, as it can be difficult to assess it yourself.

If no one is available, one way of checking the odor is to lick your wrist, leave it to dry, and then smell it. A bad smell on this area of the wrist is likely to suggest that you have halitosis.

Some individuals are concerned about their breath even though they may have little or no mouth odor. This condition is called halitophobia and can lead to obsessive mouth-cleansing behavior.

Home remedies

Other lifestyle changes and home remedies for bad breath include:

  • Brush the teeth: Be sure to brush at least twice a day, preferably after each meal.
  • Floss: Flossing reduces the build-up of food particles and plaque from between the teeth. Brushing only cleans around 60 percent of the surface of the tooth.
  • Clean dentures: Anything that goes into your mouth, including dentures, a bridge, or a mouth guard, should be cleaned as recommended on a daily basis. Cleaning prevents the bacteria from building up and being transferred back into the mouth. Changing toothbrush every 2 to 3 months is also important for similar reasons.
  • Brush tongue: Bacteria, food, and dead cells commonly build up on the tongue, especially in smokers or those with a particularly dry mouth. A tongue scraper can sometimes be useful.
  • Avoid dry mouth: Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol and tobacco, both of which dehydrate the mouth. Chewing gum or sucking a sweet, preferably sugar-free, can help stimulate the production of saliva. If the mouth is chronically dry, a doctor may prescribe medication that stimulates the flow of saliva.
  • Diet: Avoid onions, garlic, and spicy food. Sugary foods are also linked to bad breath. Reduce coffee and alcohol consumption. Eating a breakfast that includes rough foods can help clean the back of the tongue.

If breath odor persists despite controlling these factors, it is recommended that an individual visits a doctor for further tests to rule out other conditions.

Diagnosis

Often, a dentist will simply smell the breath of a person with suspected halitosis and rate the odor on a six-point intensity scale. The dentist may scrape the back of the tongue and smell the scrapings as this area can often be a source of the aroma.

How to Prepare your Disaster Emergency Kit

Disaster Kit – Life is unpredictable, and so calamities. As the day revolves, we don’t know what could happen.  Consequently, country’s northern regions are repeatedly getting struck by earthquake tremors, many citizens find themselves at risk of a natural hazard in addition to the risks associated with the pandemic. With this situation, it is really necessary to be ever-ready and vigilant at all times when unexpected calamities will strike.

For instance in Asian countries specifically in India’s west coast bracing for Cyclone Nisarga, while the country’s northern regions are repeatedly getting struck by earthquake tremors; many citizens find themselves at risk of a natural hazard in addition to the risks associated with the pandemic. If you must urgently evacuate, a go-to kit with necessary essentials will come handy. Asian countries are most likely prone to earthquakes because the continent is located at the “Pacific ring of fire”.

Anyways, no amount of preparation can stop calamities but equipping ourselves to be ready when rough time comes is necessary.

Here are some of the essential items that you should consider having in case of emergency evacuation.

Cash

If the power goes out, credit cards won’t work, neither would ATMs. Keep cash on hand to replenish supplies. Basically, on-hand cash is really essential to buy your necessities.

Medications

Your household must have medicine kit with adequate medicines and vitamins on it. Pharmacies and chemists might be closed, and hospitals could be overwhelmed. It might be difficult to get in touch with your doctor for some time after a disaster has struck. Keep a backup supply (at least several days’ worth) of important medications like blood pressure medicines and insulin.

Water and food

Water keeps you hydrated so it is really important to keep gallons of it. Pack a gallon of water for every family member and pet. Widespread power outages could make tap water unsafe to drink. Also pack non-perishable food and pet food.

Important documents

ID cards, passports, birth certificates, driver’s licenses and more could all be lost or destroyed in a flood. Keep copies of these documents in a waterproof container. Include a copy of your insurance policy so that you can quickly file a claim once the danger has passed. You may also scan the documents online so that you can have a surrogate copy. Save it on Gmail for safety or

A battery-powered radio

During calamity, a radio is a lifesaver. If electricity is out and cell towers are down, this is your only way to know what’s happening.

List of shelters

In this time of social distancing, not all shelters are open. Be sure to make a list of shelters where you can retreat. If you have a pet, make sure they are pet friendly. Not all shelters welcome pets.

A change of clothes

If you are away from your home for a few days, you will want to have a change of clothes. Throw in some masks and gloves, especially due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A mask will help avoid dust and airborne germs when you return, and gloves will aid in the clean-up.

These are some tips that you can follow to get yourself equipped and ready. Are these tips helpful to you or you want to add something else? Please let us know.

Munroe Bergdorf “Don’t use this movement to improve your public image”

Munroe Bergdorf – The model-activist talks about her thoughts to the recent death of George Floyd and the protests surrounding it in an interview. She emphasized her opinion how public figures at fashion industry for indulging to fit in themselves with the worldwide protests against racism without getting their own houses in place. Fashion houses have been struggling with their responses to the George Floyd murder. Many have been drawing criticism online for tone-deaf responses or virtue-signalling towards allyship.

Bergdorf said on The Guardian: “You can’t use a marginalized movement for capital gain or to improve your public image. White people need to see the humanity in us – I don’t think society ever got over us being property [as slaves].”

Moreover, Jonathan Anderson of JW Anderson and Loewe apologised for posting (and then deleting) an Instagram story that read: “There is only one race.” He posted a photo of the author James Baldwin alongside the apology.

Likewise, the founder of CR Fashion Book founder, Carine Roitfeld, the posted an image of herself embracing black model Anok Yai with the caption “miss you”, later adding the comment “Anok is not a black woman, she is my friend.” The deleted post was picked up by industry watchdog Diet Prada, with comments accusing her of using her of tokenism. “Before the murder of George Floyd you never posted a black woman before,” read one. Roitfeld later posted that she would like to “sincerely apologise” for the post.

“It shouldn’t be: ‘It’s such a shame a black man died, but why are people destroying property,’” said Bergdorf. “It should be: ‘It’s a shame people are destroying property, but a black man died.’” Virgil Abloh, Off-White’s designer, also apologized after all the backlash received and seeming more upset with the looting of shops than police brutality and racism.

Also Bergdorf added also made remarks towards here if fashion wanted to be progressive, it needed to address the inequality within the industry.

Despite the number of models of colour on the catwalk increasing, representation within fashion businesses is extremely performative – with empty platitudes and diversity on the catwalk, but not in the boardroom – and racially insensitive moments are still a regular occurrence.

“We need more black people in decision-making roles,” said Bergdorf. “Black people need to be able to call the shots, too, but the reality is we’re not given the opportunity. I think people need to realise that different perspectives make better products.”

Days after being hired for its True Match beauty campaign in 2017, Bergdorf was fired by L’Oréal after writing a controversial Facebook post about the racial violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, where a protestor was killed by a white supremacist.

She was axed by the company on social media, with the beauty giant tweeting: “Comments by Munroe Bergdorf are at odds with our values.” Bergdorf said that L’Oréal left her exposed to “racism, misogyny and transphobia” from internet trolls, citing a chilling threat of graphic sexual violence.

This week, Bergdorf also accused the brand of hypocrisy following  its Instagram post in the wake of George Floyd’s death, which pledged to support the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

“I was hired by L’Oréal for my intersections of identity,” said Bergdof. “But when it came down to talking about what I stood for, it was a dealbreaker. Instead of trying to understand systemic racism, they took the attitude of: ‘Shut it down, it’s a PR disaster.’” (The Guardian have reached out to the company for comment).

Surprisingly, The brand did not respond to her Instagram post, which surprised the model. “It doesn’t look good on their behalf,” she said. “I think it’s important to admit when you’ve made a mistake. They’d rather bury their head in the sand.

“My issue with L’Oréal is that they painted themselves as an ethical company, yet they’re not. How can you stand with the black community yet also sell skin-bleaching creams in Asia and Africa?”

Bergdorf also claimed that she was not paid the same as her True Match co-stars, who included the model Neelam Gill. “I was paid £2,500 for that L’Oréal campaign, which was not what other people on the campaign were being paid.

“If brands want to hire black talent, they need to pay them their worth, and if the fashion industry wants to be progressive, they need to address the inequality within the industry.”
